Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. DORIS RUTH NATHANIEL
In loving memory, Dr. Doris Nathaniel, passed away on Tuesday, at the Southeast Personal Care Home, at the remarkable age of 100.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Daisy Isaacs (nee Menzel), sister Muriel, husband Edward, and daughter Maryanne. She is survived by sons, Ernie (Lynnette), Virgil, and granddaughters, Tamara and Kiara.
In India, she attended Vellore Christian Medical school, which now is a large hospital with 2000 doctors and 3000 nurses. Those early hospital days were very rewarding, and where she met her husband, Dr. Edward Nathaniel.
In 1958, with the two small boys in tow, she joined her husband, who had left India a year and a half earlier, working on a PhD at UCLA. She obtained a Master's degree from USC. They worked at Cedars-Sinai Hospital. In 1964, the family moved to Augusta, Georgia, then to Montreal, and finally Winnipeg in 1967, where they taught medical students, Anatomy.
Maryanne was born into the family in 1970, and Ed and Doris devoted themselves to care for this precious special needs child, until she passed away in 2010.
She loved music and played piano her entire life, speaking often of playing at chapel services at her medical school. Later in life, she enjoyed painting landscapes and nature.
Her faith was a bedrock for the family. Surviving thyroid cancer, and even Covid prior to the vaccine, she was strong. Loved by family and friends, she will be missed.
Please consider donating to Effect Hope, formally Leprosy Mission International. (Dr. Paul Brand, president from 1993 to 1999, pioneered life-changing reconstructive hand surgery for leprosy-related disabilities, was one of her professors.)
Special thanks to everyone at Southeast Personal Care Home who very kindly cared for Doris through her last years.

Even though I was not privileged to meet Dr. Doris Nathaniel, I got a sense of her from Ernie's comments about his mother and the PCH where she resided. I got a good sense of who Ernie's mother was from how Ernie interacts with others and his sense of purpose, ethics and resolve to stop injustices from happening here in Manitoba of which he surely shared with his mother. I am sorry for your loss and wish you peace in remembering those who have left this earthly place. - Posted by: Trish Rawsthorne (friend of Ernie) on: Feb 07, 2024

It was such a pleasure to care for Dr. Nathaniel. A very proud women with so many accomplishments who loved her family very much. Always had a nice comment about the colours in the blouse I was wearing or how hard I worked and what a great job I was doing. Doctor you showed many how hard work and perseverance pays off. The strength you had was unremarkable. You will always be missed and never forgotten by all of us who cared for you! - Posted by: Angela Harper (care giver) on: Jan 27, 2024
