CHUN FONG CHAN
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Chun Fong Chan, on January 26, 2024, at the age of 84.
Dad is survived by his loving wife Eliza Oi Chu, and three children, Kanning (Phil), Kally (Andrew) and Karl (Kelsey); and his grandchildren, Lauren, Megan, Taylor, Trevor, Jade, Avery, and Sophie.
He will be sadly missed by his sister Sally Woo, brother Chun Ya Chan, along with many nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends.
Dad was born in Taishan county, in the province of Guangdong, China where he lived until he was a teenager and then moved to the city of Guangzhou. At the age of 20 he moved to Hong Kong where he met his wife, Oi Chu. Shortly after their marriage, they immigrated to Canada in 1971. Arriving in Winnipeg with $20 in his pocket, dad had to hold two jobs, working in a factory during the day and as a bus boy at night.
He learned to cook in Hong Kong and worked at the Marigold restaurant with his sister for nine years before he and mom started their own restaurant, Miriwa in 1980. For the next 25 years, Miriwa became a second home for us due to the long hours mom and dad had to work. The restaurant became the place where we celebrated many important occasions with friends and family. After 25 years and wonderful memories, mom and dad retired.
In retirement, mom and dad enjoyed travelling around the world with their friends and family. He especially loved playing with his grandchildren who knew and loved him as their Gong Gong and Ye Ye.
Dad will be remembered for his great sense of humour, his funny stories, generosity, and kindness to everyone he met.
The family thanks the Community Palliative Care team and all the staff at the Riverview Health Centre for their kindness over the last year.
A funeral service will be held Friday, February 2, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB. Interment will follow at Glen Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverview Health Centre (Palliative Care Unit 3E).

I can still remember going to the Miriwa as a kid for family events! Mr. Chan always allowed us to run around the restaurant and hide under chairs having as much fun and freedom as possible. He was always cheerful and pleasant to be around. Sending love and hugs to the whole family and everyone affected by this loss. - Posted by: Rachel Burns (Kanning’s niece) on: Jan 30, 2024
