EDWARD G. JANZEN
SUSAN HELEN JANZEN
Edward G. Janzen was born May 23, 1932, to Bertha and Gerhardt Janzen in Manitou and passed June 27, 2023. Susan Helen Janzen was born December 4, 1931, to Helen and Henry Dyck of Pigeon Lake and passed October 10, 2023.
Ed grew up in Springstein, MB where Susan roomed with a family while completing her high school education. They met there and were married August 9, 1952. Ed pursued his degree in chemistry at University of Manitoba while Susan supported them as an administrative assistant for the Security Storage Co.
Ed’s academic pursuits took them to Ames, Iowa where he recieved his Ph.D. and then Athens, Georgia where children, Charles and Beth were born. He was a co-discoverer of spin trapping technique in the study of free radicals and this led to many opportunities to share his research worldwide. The family lived in Japan for a year where Ed was a guest lecturer and researcher in chemistry. Ed’s career eventually brought them to Guelph, ON where he was chair of the chemistry department. Guelph remained their home base with several stints in Oklahoma. Their home revealed their travels and interests, with pictures and art on the walls reflecting the many places they lived and visited and friends they made. After retirement, Ed restored and wrote about his many cars and established the Canadian Stories magazine, which gave him an outlet for his love of writing and Susan her excellent bookkeeping skills. They will be missed.
Cremation has taken place and two trees will be planted in their memory in the Guelph Arboretum. Wall-Custance in care of arrangements.
