EVELYN HIND

(nee CAREY)

March 16, 1930 - January 31, 2024

After a life well lived, it is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn at the age of 93.

Left to forever cherish her memory are her loving son, Richard Topolnicki, and her cousin, Florence Scalena. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Terry, parents Dan and Pauline Carey, and siblings Olga and Dennis.

Evelyn grew up in the North End, attending Norquay and David Livingston schools in her elementary years. She attended Aberdeen School in her mid-teens and spent Sundays playing volleyball and basketball at Stella Mission. It was here that she developed her lifelong passion for sports. As the eldest child, she was required to work every day after school to help support the family. These years instilled a strong work ethic, which defined her throughout her life.

She worked for Canadian Industries Limited in the accounting department and was often left in charge when the boss was out of town. She would go on to work with Winnipeg Enterprises as the box office manager, credited with bringing the first automated system, Select-A-Seat, to Winnipeg. It was here that she met the General Business Manager of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Terry Hind. They would be married in 1967 and would be married for almost 50 years when he passed away in 2007.

Evelyn would remain a huge Bombers fan, holding season tickets right through to the 2023 season. Their careers revolved around their love for sports, where they met many lifelong friends. What Evelyn loved most about her work was meeting people. She had many social groups, including The Mafia Wives, The Bombers Lunch Group Girls, and The Saturday Breakfast Club to which she brought laughter and her sparkling blue eyes. Summers were spent at the Carey cottage at Sandy Hook, where they often had

Thanksgiving dinner. Their retirement was spent at their winter home in Arizona, where they made new friends and entertained many snowbirds. Evelyn's generosity helped friends in times of need and many charities. In her later years, Evelyn enjoyed nothing more than a good evening of sports and cribbage with her loving son Richard who provided her with continual companionship, care, and love.

Evelyn was a very strong, independent individual who always met her challenges with optimistic determination. We would like to thank the many healthcare people from WRHA Home Care and, more recently, the staff from Right at Home for their compassionate care. Evelyn’s life was enriched by your friendship.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd., starting at 11:00 a.m.
