DOROTHY SOBERING (TOEWS)

SEPTEMBER 12, 1936 – FEBRUARY 2, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Dorothy Ellen Sobering (Toews), on Friday, February 2nd, 2024 at The Cottages in Steinbach with her twins by her side. She was 87 years old.

Dorothy was the baby in the family, born September 12, 1936 in Steinbach to Abraham and Helena Toews. Her older sister Anne got to name her and is the reason why she was the only one in the family with a middle name.

Dorothy was the last surviving sibling of her Toews family. She is survived by her husband, four children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even two great-great-grandchildren! Dorothy married Art Sobering December 5th, 1953 in Steinbach and they had four children together - James (Toni), Beverly (Ron), and the twins Curtis (Sandy) and Kyle (Holly). Dorothy spent her years raising her children and working part time at Rest Haven doing laundry. She also worked for ACL with their apartment program. She loved to entertain friends and family (aka feed us all).

After her children were grown and grandchildren came around she enjoyed spending time with them. Dorothy loved picnics in Sandilands, coloring and was a skilled whistler. Goodness, could she whistle! She had a very relaxed approach to life, taking it all in stride. One of her favorite sayings was "It just doesn't matter". She always kept a pair of wool socks in her car with some spare cash- just in case. She enjoyed coffee dates with her Ekron friends, taking the bus into Winnipeg, watching the Toronto Blue Jay's play and playing Kinsmen bingo. We will miss her beautiful smile, rosy cheeks, and warm hugs.

The funeral service for Dorothy Sobering (Toews) will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society.
