Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCAROL ELSIE TURMAN
With profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Carol Turman on January 31, 2024 with family by her side. Carol was a compassionate mother, loving sister and auntie and a loyal friend to so many.
Carol's memory lives on in her two daughters, Shaelynn and Tyla. She is also survived by her sister and best friend Alice Turman, along with many nieces and nephews and their families.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband Dennis in 2020; her parents, Fred and Lavina Cole; in-laws, Alex and Helen Turman; brothers, Bert and Wayne Cole; brothers-in-law, Rudy and Tony Turman; and sister-in-law Alice Pagee.
Carol grew up in Spearhill, Manitoba. She was very athletic as a runner and high jumper in her younger years. After graduating high school, Carol moved to Winnipeg and lived with one of her best friends growing up, Judy Plohman (Altman). She always reminisced with us about the fun times they had together and all the laughs they shared.
Carol worked at several administrative jobs in the city before she met and married the love of her life, Dennis, on September 11, 1971. They made their way to Wayburn, Saskatchewan to co-manage the Weyburn Hotel and later returned to St. Martin, Manitoba to help run the family farm. Carol worked with her father-in-law Alex Turman at Turman's Agency, later taking over the business on her own. Carol and Dennis also ventured into small business ownership by taking over the St. Martin Solo Store on Hwy#6 while still managing the farm and raising their two daughters.
In 2004, Carol suffered a brain aneurysm and thankfully with the quick-thinking skills of Nurse Colleen, was sent to Winnipeg where she made a full recovery. We are so deeply grateful for the almost 20 bonus years we have had with her. In 2008, Carol and Dennis sold the family farm and moved to Winnipeg to be closer to their family.
Carol was well known for her baking and began naming cakes after their adopted RCMP family members who would come to visit while having Dad sign papers as the Magistrate. She was also quite the cook, becoming a pretty great Ukrainian cook for an Irish woman! Carol was known for being well put together and having long manicured fingernails and still maintained them in the care home. She loved spending time in her gardens and tending to her flowers on the farm. Carol spent years volunteering in the community and was instrumental in the development of the Northern Interlake Recreation Centre (N.I.R.C.). During this time, she received a Governor General Medal of Honour for her volunteer service. Throughout her life, Carol wrote countless poems, many of which were published for others to enjoy. The most notable was "The Bugle Calls" which was in memory of her uncle Ira, a fallen soldier. Another love of Carol's was spending time watching sports on TV. She never missed a Blue Bombers, Jets or Blue Jays game and was a passionate curling fan. If there were no sports on TV she would be absorbed in watching her Hallmark Movies or Gilmore Girls and Private Eyes shows.
In 2020, Carol lost her husband Dennis to chronic illness and began to progress with her own chronic health issues. She continued to live in their apartment until October 30, 2023 when she decided it was time to be in a place where she could receive more care. She moved to Pembina Place Personal Care Home where she resided until her passing. We can't say enough about the amazing care and comfort she received there from the staff these past few months. We are also grateful to the Home Care and Respiratory Services Teams that were there for her while she lived at home. We thank all our family and friends for the love and support we have received. We were lucky to have her as a Mom and to know that we were so loved.
In keeping with Carol's wishes, there will not be a service at this time. A memorial with close family and friends will be planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice.
