ISAI EDWARD LUJAN

December 1, 1935 โ€“ February 21, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and uncle Isai Edward Lujan on February 21, 2024, at the age of 88. Edward is survived by Adelaide, his wife of 52 years, two brothers, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Edward was born in Laredo, Texas, and grew up in Alamogordo, New Mexico, in a family of five boys and two girls. Edward was a graduate of Highlands University in New Mexico. He did post-graduate work at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT.

Edward spent five years teaching in Taos, New Mexico, interrupted by being drafted into the US Military. He served at the Naval School of Music in Washington, DC.

Edward came to Canada in 1968 to teach piano at University of Manitoba Music School. The remainder of his career was spent teaching band in the St. Boniface School Division. Edward was much loved by his students. During his initial stay in Manitoba he decided to become a Canadian citizen. Music was a common thread throughout his life.

A Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.

  • Although I've reached the age when I understand that none of us lives forever, I was sad to learn of Mr. Lujan passing. He was my band teacher in Beliveau Collegiate from 1971 to 1973. Before classes began in a school new to me, he met with each of us individually alongside our parents so we could choose an instrument. I was excited to play clarinet. My dad had played and sometimes I'd pretend to play his. I taught myself to play Mary had a little Lamb, but I wanted to learn how to play from a piece of sheet music as I had learned to play piano. At the meeting, Mr. Lujan suggested that I try the flute as my braces might be an issue playing clarinet. And though I wasn't prone to displays of emotion, I burst into tears. I'll never forget the look on his face. He felt bad. He was kind and fair. In the end, it was clarinet for me. I could hardly wait. Some teachers of the day could be a little grouchy, and who could blame them, but I felt safe and respected in Mr. Lujan's class. We were there to accomplish something that mattered. He cared about his work. Thank-you Mr. Lujan. Your life made a difference. - Posted by: Carol (Besant) Brisebois (Student) on: Feb 29, 2024

  • I played trumpet in Beliveau Junior High under the direction of Ed from /75 to /78. We were among the top bands in the province, if not the country because of the discipline and the love that Mr. Lujan instilled in us. I developed my passion for the instrument in that classroom from this great and profoundly talented man. I am near the end of my playing career at this point, but I am still the Orchestra Contractor for Rainbow Stage and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. My wife of nearly 30 years plays violin 1 in the WSO. I met her working for Andrew Lloyd Webber while playing a 3 year tour of the U.S. It has been an odd life, but a fine, and very interesting one that I wouldn't trade. I've played in many famous venues and worked with many famous personalities. If I had started anywhere else but under Ed Lujan's tutelage, I am certain that I would never have taken this uncertain but very gratifying road so seldomly travelled. Thanks for everything Ed! - Posted by: David Lawton (Student) on: Feb 25, 2024

  • Neighbours since 1986, I couldn't have asked for a nicer neighbour, who watched my kids grow and saw me through 2 husbands. I was so sorry to see the ambulance at the door the other day, and still can't believe we will no longer see the cornerstone of our neighbourhood. Everyone on Dayton has good memories of his smiling face. Adele, please call on me if you want some help with a photo tribute for the memorial. I've started my search through old photos already. - Posted by: Roberta Beach (neighbour) on: Feb 25, 2024

  • He was my band teacher in the mid 70's at Beliveau, and my homeroom teacher one year. A wonderful teacher and a great guy. Lots of good memories. My condolences. - Posted by: Allyson Sparkes (nee Kathler) (former student) on: Feb 24, 2024

  • We are so saddened to hear of our dear friend Ed's passing. A kinder, wittier or thoughtful man is hard to find. The Miller family were fortunate to know Ed and Adele for over 50 years, and no one could make Audrey laugh harder than Ed. She will no doubt be delighted to see him again and that picture makes us smile. We will miss his cards sent with genuine care and loving wishes for us and our families on each occasion, and we were often welcomed into their beautiful home with grace and warmth. Memories of his concert piano playing, followed by Adele's lively renditions, are treasured from many years ago. May he rest in peace from a long happy life well lived with Adele and their families. We are only a phone call away Adele. ๐Ÿ’–Wayne and Lori. - Posted by: Wayne and Lori Miller (Friends) on: Feb 24, 2024

  • I remember Mr. Lujan. I wasn't a band student but was in a music class with him and I remember him playing the whole rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar for us. This gave me an appreciation for telling stories through music. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Kathy Stevenson (Former student) on: Feb 24, 2024
