RONALD JOSEPH TOEWS

May 11, 1936 - February 21, 2024

It is with heavy hearts the family of Ron Toews announce his passing on February 21, 2024. Dad was 87.

Dad was the youngest of eight children born to Cornelius and Mary Toews on May 11, 1936. Dad married our mom, Tina Unger on August 3, 1957. At that time, Dad’s work was building bridges. They made their home in their trailer wherever they were building a bridge. They lived in many different locations and made many life-long friends along the way. After their daughters, Brenda and Bev, came along, it was time to settle down. Dad moved his young family to Killarney, MB and bought into the local hardware store in 1965. As the business grew, so did the family. Doug and Neil came along to complete the family. While growing up, all the kids worked at the hardware store now known as Home Hardware. Dad’s two sons would eventually take over the family business. Dad was extremely proud of his family, of the business he loved and that it was going into the third generation with his grandchildren, Dylan and Brooklyn.

And although Dad worked very hard and always had a project on the go, he always made time for family and friends. The family enjoyed a lot of camping adventures including BC, PEI and California.

Dad was active in the community. He served one term as a town councillor and was a volunteer fire fighter for 10 years. He enjoyed playing liniment league baseball and curling, and of course the socializing.

Mom and Dad travelled extensively and especially enjoyed their caravan tours which included a three-month trip to the Panama Canal, and RV caravans in Australia and New Zealand.

When our mom began her Alzheimer journey, dad was by her side, his love and devotion never stronger. It was during this time when Helen joined our family. Together they would continue to travel and winter in Texas. This past summer Dad and Helen drove to Alaska with friends. This would be his last big adventure! Dad loved his adventures but was always happy to come home to Killarney. He believed in the slogan, “There’s No Better Place”!

Dad was predeceased by his wife Tina in 2014. He leaves to mourn his special companion, Helen Jackson; his four children, Brenda Nichol (Goldie), Bev Krahn (Bernie), Doug Toews (Sherry), Neil Toews (Germaine); his seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Melissa Nichol (Gerry Coolen) and kids, Macy and Ryder, Amanda Nichol (Clint), Curtis Nichol (Katrina) and kids, Kohen, Nash and Luka, Brittany Krahn (fiancé Kieven Martens), Shayla Toews, Dylan Toews, and Brooklyn Toews.

It is not how he died, but how he did live that we will remember and treasure!
