HELEN KEREN BRAGG

It is with sadness that we announce the death of our Aunt Helen after a long and full life.

Helen Keren Bragg was born at home in Elmwood, Winnipeg on March 20, 1926, to Florence May and Charles Ernest Bragg. She was the youngest child in the family and was predeceased by her parents, sisters - Carrie Garson, Marjorie MacDonald, Beth (Elizabeth) Nickel, Peggy (Margaret) Calder and only brother, Gordon Bragg.

After growing up in Elmwood, helping out as did the whole family in Bragg's United Store, she decided on a career in nursing. She trained at Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1947. Her first job was in Yorkton, Saskatchewan followed by work in Hamilton, Bermuda which by all accounts was a wonderful adventure. Returning to Jersey City, New Jersey she completed a course in maternity nursing after which she returned to Canada where she worked in Winnipeg and Vancouver as a special duty nurse. She also travelled to England to care for a young boy with polio.

On returning to Canada Helen took further training in Public Health Nursing where she found her calling. She worked in this field in Manitoba and British Columbia until her retirement in 1990. During this period she became a companion and caregiver for her mother which continued until Florence's death in 1975. After retirement Helen continued to travel and always enjoyed new experiences. After many years living in various cities in British Columbia she moved back to Winnipeg in 2007 to be near her brother Gordon and her many nieces and nephews who called Manitoba home.

Surviving Helen are members of the Garson, MacDonald, Bragg and Calder families who were glad to be able to spend time with her in her later years and learn more about her adventures over a long, interesting lifetime.

The family thanks the staff at Rosewood Retirement Home and Pembina Place Personal Care Home for the care and comfort she received during the last years of her life.

A private family celebration of her life will take place at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • To the family, A friend, from Winnipeg noticed The obituary of your Helen Bragg. On that day I acquired a postcard written to Miss Helen Bragg, 247 Glenwood Crescent, Winnipeg. From her parents who were traveling in the mountains near Banff. August 11, 1932. I have the card, I took a picture of it, but it will not send here. If you are interested, or it is the same Helen, you are welcome to have it. Guy - Posted by: Guy Fortier (Non, ) on: Apr 08, 2024

  • I’m very sad to hear of Aunt Helen’s passing and offer my profound condolences to the Bragg family. Aunt Helen no doubt lived an incredible and rewarding life. I still remember my Grandma taking me to see Aunt Helen and Grandma Bragg in Vancouver when I was about five years old ( which is over 50 years ago now). After all these years, I can still remember how welcoming she was to me as a little boy on his first trip to a faraway place, and how much fun I had during my week there. Something I’ll always remember. - Posted by: Doug Garson (Great nephew) on: Mar 23, 2024
