  • The Grey Owl Golf Tournament just held its 62nd annual golf tournament at the Clear Lake Golf Course two weeks ago. 62 years is an incredibly long time for such a tournament to continue and its long-term success is due to the passion by its originators and directors. People like Cactus Jack Wells, Bob Picken, Ralph Bagley and of course Steady Eddie Dearden, who was granted the Grey Owl Honour Award in 1970. His commitment to playing and more importantly help lead and organize the tournament over the years has been absolutely critical to its success. His passion and kindness attracted new directors to the board and helped continue to build the tournament to one of the most popular golf tournaments in Western Canada. The Grey Owl Golf Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank Ed for everything he did for the tournament over the years, as well as give our sincerest condolences to the Dearden family. - Posted by: The Grey Owl Golf Tournament Committee (Friends) on: Jun 20, 2024

  • I first met Eddie when I joined the board of the Grey Owl Golf tournament. He was always pleasant, welcoming and direct to the point. Qualities I admire. He also had a very sneaky sense of humour and kept the board meetings flowing. Rest In Peace Eddie. - Posted by: Brad Gray (Past President Grey Owl Committee) (Friend) on: Jun 02, 2024

  • I had the pleasure of working with Ed at the Province’s Sport Directorate. He was the consummate gentleman who always took a sincere interest in our families and personal interests. He, along with Jack Matheson from the Winnipeg Tribune, served as a contributing member of the inaugural committee of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame. His love of golf lead to his doing regular Teeing It Up for O.B. Reports on CJOB. Steady Eddie was a friend to everyone. - Posted by: Rick Lambert (Colleague ) on: Apr 15, 2024

  • My first memory of Steady Eddie goes back to when he was working full-time for the CP and I worked for HBM&S. We had to talk on the phone two or three times a week about the cars of coal that the CP were delivering out of Alberta en route to Flin Flon. After he moved to the Tribune sports department full-time, our paths crossed again when I started freelancing for the Trib. As assistant sports editor, he always was supportive. For many years, we played in the media hockey group where he used an effective poke check to stop forwards such as me and his son Craig. Steady Eddie also was one of the most positive persons I ever met. RIP - Posted by: Kent Morgan (Friend) on: Apr 12, 2024

  • So sorry to hear of "Steady Eddie's" passing. He was an ardent supporter of amateur golf in Manitoba and always attended our events for material for his stories and columns. It was always a pleasure to spend time talking about golf and life with him during my competitive days in Manitoba. My condolences to his family. • I came to know Ed Dearden when I joined the directors of the Grey Owl Golf Tournament in the late 1990s. Ed was very welcoming and friendly. He was also a valued member of the directors. His input was always very thoughtful and insightful. Rest in peace Ed. • I knew Eddie for decades through the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. One way to describe him was as a true gentleman. He was always friendly and welcoming, even when I was a budding sportswriter. He always offered a smile and helping hand, passing on his sports knowledge in a humble way. He left his mark on the local sports community and will be missed. Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Judy Owen (Friend) on: Apr 06, 2024
