LENA IRENE MASTALER

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Lena Irene Mastaler.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her daughter Sherry, grandchildren, Nicole and Kaden, brother Arthur, and sister Dorothy as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Lena was dearly loved by her family and was the greatest Grandma to her beloved grandkids. Our favourite memories will always be our sleepovers at her house where she would be stocked with our favourite snacks and games, playing Scrabble at the lake during the summers, and the way she was always ready for a trip out for breakfast.

Her favourite ways to spend her time were coming over for an evening BBQ or watching every Jets’ game, in their younger years going to the lake with her sister in the summers, and she was always excited for a weekend with her decades long best friend (Gaby).

The independent and headstrong nature Lena lived her life with will always be remembered and cherished by her family and friends. Lena managed to raise a daughter alone, sometimes working two jobs to support her daughter and herself. She was fortunate enough to get a job with 17th Wing Winnipeg when her daughter was young, which she continued to work at until her retirement.

We would like to thank the Grace Hospital palliative care team whose kindness and support allowed her to be at home with her family in her last days as well as the amazing support from family and friends near and far during this difficult time.

We know Bailey will be waiting for you at the pearly gates Grandma. Until we meet again,

If roses grow in heaven,

Lord, please pick a bunch for me, place them in my Mother's arms and tell her they're from me.

Tell her I love her and miss her, and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while. Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, but there's an ache within my heart that will never go away.

I love you mom and will miss you deeply.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I used to work with Lena at 17 Wing Supply and she was hilarious and such a lively woman. I was just thinking of her and went to look her up, just to see that she had passed. It was because I have a woodchuck under my shed and we had one at the old bldg. we worked at. I remember when Lena was outside of our old bldg. for her smoke break, she hadn't come back in and we were trying to figure out where she was. So I went outside and there Lena was, standing on top of the picnic table, scared that the woodchuck was going to come get her. I had to escort her back into the bldg. She was laughing so hard. I hope this story brought a smile to your face. I have missed her. I had also compared Lena to a character from a British comedy, "Are You Being Served?" She looked like Mrs Slokum. You can look it up. She always just waved her hand at me and said nah. Lovely, beautiful woman - Posted by: Coreena Keeley (Former co-worker) on: Jul 13, 2024
