DENNIS ALBERT GORDON SWAYZE

It is with incredible sadness the family announces the passing of Dennis Swayze on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Despite the terrific efforts of First Responders and the team of doctors, nurses and support staff at the St. Boniface Hospital, a recovery was not in God’s Plan.

Dennis is survived by his wife Jan; sons, Trevor (Richelle) Cook and Chad Swayze (Travis Marshall); daughters, Jana (Randy) Peterson and Carmen (Corey) Fredborg; grandchildren, Austin, Ethan, Payton, and Jase Cook; Bailey, and Taylor Peterson; Shyla and Emmrie Fredborg. He is also survived by his brother Norman, and sister Lori (Laurier) Donais; children, Jacqueline, Jadon, Joshua, and Jared. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Helen Swayze (Wiszniak); daughter Natalie; daughter-in-law Sonja; and granddaughter Madison Peterson.

On Saturday, May 4, 2024, a graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00 noon at Living Hope Community Church, 51 Morrow Avenue. Additional parking is available in the shopping centre parking lot behind the church on Niakwa Road.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I was getting my yearly Christmas gifts together this year and realized I missed one crucial item, The Manitoba Bird Calendar. It was a thing of beauty, created by a person possessing great skill and care. I looked forward to Dennis coming by the community center each December to share his stories and facts about the lives of birds. It was always a delight. Dennis was such a lovely person and so dedicated to wildlife and their welfare. When I see a hawk in my travels I will think fondly of their friend, Dennis. My deepest Condolences to Jan and family. - Posted by: Bob Thorsteinson (Friend ) on: Dec 27, 2024

  • I just heard recently from another former co-worker from Shaw of Dennis passing away. I always enjoyed working with Dennis and all his stories that he had from his years of service. An amazing individual now gone but never forgotten. My condolences to the family. Hopefully the bird watching is great up there Dennis! - Posted by: Roy kolossa (Ex work colleague ) on: Nov 27, 2024

  • Man Dennis we are going to miss you. Our workplace loved printing your bird calendars every year. In fact it gave me personally a deep appreciation for birds and I have been photographing wildlife now since the pandemic. Thank you for everything you did to display their beauty and your passion for them was crystal clear. Condolences to your family, friends, and every bird you helped along the way. - Posted by: Charles Smadella (Work) on: Nov 14, 2024

  • Deeply sad to hear about Dennis. We got to know him when two friends of ours came to Winnipeg from Australia a few times and were treated to two local birding tours with Dennis. They were especially impressed with how quickly and seemingly easily he could spot a snowy owl in the winter on the open prairie. Dennis also donated some of his work to our Australian bushfire fundraiser back in 2020, and he helped me identify a few birds of prey I only saw from a distance. Our friends in Oz asked me to pass on that they really liked Dennis and appreciated his time and friendship, and they agreed he was a 'straight up guy', a real Canadian. Dennis was a good man and his body of work will be a testament to his passion and skill in photographing birds. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. - Posted by: Jenny Gates (Friend) on: May 07, 2024

  • Dennis was a dear old friend of both my late husband, Ivan and I. We remember people for different reasons. Thru the years, we shared happy & sad times with many mutual passions & interests of birds & wildlife. His works of tracking the subjects for his photography, calendar art, the endangered peregrine falcon roof set-up at the Radisson Hotel, were above & beyond dedication. Dennis' generosity of caring was appreciated by all who knew him. Whether they happened through job encounters, the occasional MB Canary & Finch Club activities or so many other aspects in his broad range of interests. He was always gentle, enjoyed a laugh & was supportive. May he Rest in Peace. With Heartfelt Condolences to Jan & her Family - Hoping your Memories bring Comfort. - Posted by: Connie LeBlanc (friend) on: Apr 23, 2024

  • Condolences to family and friends. I was one of many people that enjoyed his bird photos, he brightened many days for me and I’m grateful. He will be missed. - Posted by: Paul Fulton (Aquaintace) on: Apr 22, 2024

  • I am so incredibly sad for the heartbreak your Dad’s passing has brought. He was a generous and wonderful friend to everyone at Habitat Manitoba. His smiling face and many kindnesses will be missed at the many events he attended. I am sure he is soaring with the eagles he so wonderfully captured in the beautiful photos he took. God bless. • Dennis, you are now one of the precious angels in the heavens. Your physical presence on earth amongst friends will be greatly missed. Your constant smile and positivity at the "Hydro lunch bunch" get-togethers was always so welcoming with both you and Jan. You have touched many hearts and the memories you created with us will be cherished until such time we meet again. Debbie Meilleur. - Posted by: Debra Meilleur (Friend) on: Apr 20, 2024
