Sister Daria Sportak died peacefully at Holy Family Home on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, in Winnipeg, MB.
Mildred was born in Vita, MB with her twin brother Maurice to Olena Stefiuk and Michael Sportak, a farming family, on November 2, 1932.
After graduating from grade nine in her local school she left her home in Caliento to work in Winnipeg for several years. There she encountered the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate; after two years of discernment on May 29, 1955, she entered their Novitiate in Ancaster, ON. She received her habit on December, 8, 1955, and took the name Sister Daria. She professed First Vows on December 9, 1957, and perpetual vows August 15, 1961.
To the 1970s Sr. Daria served in the childcare homes the Sisters Servants conducted in Ituna, SK and Mundare, AB. In 1973 she graduated from the St. Boniface School of Nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse. For 33 years she served in the SSMI health care mission in Alberta and in Dauphin and Winnipeg, Manitoba.
She will be fondly remembered for her selfless generosity, compassion, prayer, sense of humour and love of life.
She will be missed by her loving family, the SSMI’s, and all whom she encountered and served.
She is survived by her brother Joseph, sister-in-law Gertrude (John), numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers, Paul, Maurice, William, John and sisters, Frozenia (Rose) Dysievich, Mary Kuzyk, Agnes Buckholz and Anne Makowsky.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m. and Monday, April 22, at 10:00 a.m. at Bethany Home, 131 Aberdeen Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Home or to the Lubov Foundation.
