DARREN DALE HAWKINS

Our family sadly announces Darren's peaceful passing on March 29, 2024. He is predeceased by Thelma and Dale Hawkins and Peter Hellsten. He retired after working over 30 years at St. Boniface Hospital. Darren had a keen sense of rules. That meant you didn't leave early. He even cancelled his Handi-Transit ride home to get a delivery to a ward needing it.

Our brother has always had special interests. Music was one of them! Darren was in a garage band with his brother Tim and sister Bee which literally used garage items to make music. Ask him any music question and he could recite lyrics, give dates and details about the members in it. When Darren began school, he convinced the principal to allow him to give a weather report before school started. We believed his reports over any others. Sadly, his wish to be a storm chaser won't come true. Darren also had a fascination with buses and their routes. This fascination was not only in Winnipeg. He was young when he convinced mom to let him take a bus to school. He would take the bus in the opposite direction just to be on it longer. Darren loved travelling Canada and the US. His favourite trips were in Vancouver when he could spend time with his sister Bee.

Darren was an avid curler. He loved the sport and would discuss games every chance he got. Our brother belonged to the CNIB Curling League. We'd get a play by play of all the home and away bonspiels. He missed going to the nationals this year but was able to discuss details with Norman Lyons (a fellow curler). That meant so much to him. Darren often spoke of all of his curling friends here as well as across Canada. He missed you dearly.

Darren faced many adversities in his 58 years. Some were more difficult than others, but he persevered. Darren has donated his body to science. He wanted to know why he was blind and what caused Asperger's. In addition to this, he donated his corneas. Knowing he has given sight to someone would mean the world to him. He is our hero.

Toast Darren with a Starbucks iced frappuccino and a scratch ticket. If you'd prefer to make a donation, please do so with Manitoba Blind Sports Association.
