OLIVE JULIA THORVALDSON

(nee CHOMOKOVSKI)

Olive Julia (nee Chomokovski) Thorvaldson drew her last breath at the age of 93 on April 17, 2024, at the Arborg Personal Care Home.

A one-of-a-kind social butterfly, Olive was a gem. She chose joy, gratitude and happiness over ruminating over life's hardships and struggles. She forgave because life was indeed short; she wanted to smell the beautiful flowers of her world and she did.

Born in Winnipeg on November 25, 1930, at the old Grace Hospital, Olive is the daughter of Ksenia Szlapak and Max Chomokovski, who came to Canada in 1916 from Ukraine. Ksenia and Max were one of the first to homestead in the Okno-Rosenberg area north of Arborg.

Olive was one of nine kids who grew up a log cabin, in the time of horse and buggy. She had six brothers and two sisters. "Auntie Olive" was a positive influence in so many people's lives, including her many nieces and nephews. Her kindness made a difference.

Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Arborg Personal Care home for their excellent care to Olive over the years.

The funeral will be held Thursday, April 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Ukrainian Catholic Church in Arborg, with interment at the Okno Cemetery.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Some of our earliest memories are of Auntie Olive's visits and precious love. She curled our hair with rag curlers. Each curl was like a little spring popping out of our heads. We were ecstatic!! Oh how we reveled in Auntie's Olive's love and care. Christmas came to our house around Easter when Auntie Olive's large box of gifts arrived. One... two... three... blue identical sweaters with pink flower appliques. And a bag of candy. Other goodies too. (WOW, it didn't get any better than that). She knew how to delight our hearts. She was the BEST! Auntie Olive left some of her handwritten old song books at our house. When times were difficult Pat and I would sit on the edge of the bed together singing some of Auntie's songs. Tears poured down our faces as we sang very sad, tragic songs. I like to think these were healing songs. May God's loving arms surround and comfort us all as we miss and mourn the loss of our dear Auntie. Richard and Marie, Words cannot begin to express our gratitude to you for the many years you lovingly cared for Auntie. Thank you. God Bless You.
