It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Garry, after a very short battle with pancreatic cancer.
Garry grew up in St. Vital in Winnipeg, attending Glenwood School and Glenlawn Collegiate. He played minor football with the St. Vital Mustangs, winning the Provincial Championship in 1973. Garry was a big Blue Bomber fan, holding season tickets for 25 years. Garry worked at Manitoba Public Insurance from 1981 to his retirement in 2013.
In September 2019, Garry moved to Nanaimo where he found his wonderful apartment right across from the beach. He became a member of the Nanaimo Golf Club where he golfed almost every day. He was so proud of his game totals which exceeded over 200 each year! On May 6, 2022, Garry got his first Hole In One at the Nanaimo Golf Club - his "happy place".
Garry is survived by his brother Victor (Susan) Hawkins, his sister Lynne (Dave) Yule, nephews, Darren (Holly), Wade (LeeAnn), Tyler (Annie), his niece Jessica (Andrew) Hawkins, and his cousin Fred Storozuk.
Garry was predeceased by his brother David in 2011, his parents, Albert Hawkins in 1997 and Eileen Hawkins in 2007, and his cousin Eileen Storozuk in 2021.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Garry at the Nanaimo Golf Club at a later date.
Garry was such a happy positive person and for all those that knew him - he will be missed.
If you wish, in memory of Garry, please make a donation to the New Nanaimo Cancer Centre.

I am sad to hear of Garry's passing as he was a great person that would certainly make you always laugh when he was around. I have great memories growing up in St. Vital with Garry and going to Glenwood School and Glenlawn Collegiate together. We had a great group of friends including Rollie, Greg, Dwight, Roger, Allan, Paul, Gerry, Elaine, Rhonda and many more. I still laugh at some of the things we did golfing at the St. Boniface Golf Club as juniors, playing football for the Mustangs and hanging around Glenwood Community Centre and going to the Friday night dances. I will think of you during my golf games and will make sure to drive by your childhood home on Egerton Rd next time I am in Winnipeg. Gary Ward - Posted by: Gary Ward (Friend ) on: May 13, 2024

My wife and I are so sorry to hear of Gary’s (aka Hawk) passing. We had spent many years enjoying his company. We have many great memories of us snow-golfing, playing darts, go cart riding, Caesar making nights, snowmobiling, and going to Bomber games along with many other memories. He was an amazing friend and co-worker. He was kind, gentle, happy and always had a smile to list a few. We are so happy to hear he was able to enjoy his retirement playing golf. He was a tremendous golfer and loved the game. Gary you lived life to its fullest! You and our friendship will never be forgotten. Garry Hawkins as I have a smile on my lips “that’s right” your laughter will always be with me. You always made me laugh. Our visits I would leave in tears with my sides sore. Our phone calls would be the same. You were always a special friend like a brother to me. We could talk for hours and pick up again. Well buddy you left us way too soon. So many memories most at 420 Pembina Hwy. We were not just co-workers we were family. How about our Friday golf tournaments, I was not a golfer but drove the gold cart around and around. Endless gatherings with the 420 Pembina group. Throughout the city or just outside. Our group of friends and still are friends always had fun. Then the gatherings with Darwin, Bev, Bob, Kathy, me, Grant and of course we would never leave out Garry (St Vital crew ♥️♥️) Watch hockey, football what was the sports on the boob-tube with loads of food. See you at the old Bomber Stadium, I do believe that was your second home. You may be gone Garry but you will all be in our hearts. Colleen - Posted by: Colleen Okrainec (Friend ) on: May 11, 2024

I’m am deeply saddened and shocked to learn the news of Garry’s passing. He was such a wonderful man, and as his neighbor, we shared many a good time at “shed night”. It is comforting to know he was able to spend so much time with his family over the past few years and enjoyed his winter vacations with you. I know how happy he was living in B.C. and being able to golf almost every day. He was the biggest football fan I know! He will be terribly missed by all who knew him. This is heartbreaking news to me. Marcie. - Posted by: Marcia Ewatski (Neighbor and friend) on: May 11, 2024
