GERRY STROM

Gerry Strom, born January 21, 1955, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024. Gerry worked almost his entire career at the University of Manitoba and was a passionate advocate for computer technology, sciences and lifelong learning. He was almost always taking another course at the U of M. He had an analytical mind and desire to empower others through informed decision-making.

Gerry would have loved to know that this obituary was originally drafted by AI.

An avid camper and canoeist, Gerry found joy in nature, often spending weekends exploring the great outdoors with family and friends, and always on the lookout for rocks to collect. We will cherish all the memories made with him. He was also the life of the party, with him and Cecile often being the last to leave.

He spent many years volunteering with a variety of groups, including for Greendell Community Centre, Association of Employees Supporting Education Services (AESES), Festival du Voyageur, Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Liberal Party of Canada.

Gerry was predeceased by his Dad, Wilf, and his wonderful partner Cecile. He will be missed terribly by his Mom, Audrey; siblings, Vicky (Avril) and Ed; his children, Tanya (Lee) and Erik (Stephanie); his grandchildren Alex and Ryan, as well as his extended family and many, many loving friends.

Gerry will be remembered for his warmth, intellect, and unwavering support for loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity and kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stoke Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba in his honour.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • So sad to hear of Gerry's passing. We were great friends when I attended U of M in the late 80's. He was one of a kind! - Posted by: Nancy Collins (Friend) on: Oct 04, 2024

  • I was so sad to hear that Gerry had passed away. We worked together for several years at the University of Manitoba, until I left the university in 1992. Gerry had great ideas, and often came up with interesting solutions. It was always enjoyable to work with him, and Gerry was well respected by the people he worked with. Even though we had not been in touch for many years, I have such good memories of Gerry. - Posted by: John Gabel (Co-worker) on: Jul 28, 2024

  • Gerry was a great guy, always taking courses and learning, and really enjoying life! I remember going to the Arts Socials and always seeing Gerry there, dancing. He had a successful strategy for winning silent auctions that he shared. I miss Gerry since he retired, and it is sad to know that I won't see him again. - Posted by: Laura Brown (Colleague in Arts) on: Jul 23, 2024

  • I worked together with Gerry at the University of Manitoba but I most got to know him when we worked together on the AESES Classification Appeal Board. It was a pleasure to work through each appeal case, and then "go into battle" to advocate for a fair outcome for our fellow union members. We made a good team, and I always knew Gerry was committed to the advocacy, and dedicated to thoroughly analyzing each and every appeal. I enjoyed working with him. My condolences to Gerry's family and friends. - Posted by: David Wyatt (Co-worker) on: Jul 22, 2024

  • I served with Gerry on AESES for several years. He was always a voice of reason and a man of good cheer. It was an honour to have worked with him. - Posted by: Alice Foster (Colleague on AESES Board and Executive) on: Jul 20, 2024

  • Sincere sympathy Audrey on the loss of your beloved son. You certainly enriched the life of my son Sean for which I am most grateful. - Posted by: Elaine Bennett mother of Sean Bennett (Son swam with the St James Seals when Audrey and Wilf coached) on: Jul 20, 2024

  • Wow, so Sad to hear of Gerry's passing. He was an amazing guy and good friend. We were very close friends in High School, and had so many crazy Adventures in those years. We reconnected over the last dozen years or so, as practical considering i have lived in BC for the last 45 years. Every year I have visited Winnipeg at least once, and we would get together a few times- usually with Cecille until recently. We would usually hit a bar with live music, which was one of their passions. We shared a love for the Blues, and Gerry was a familiar face to so many folks in the Winnipeg music scene. Gerry was always such Fun, and contributed his wit, wisdom and unique perceptions to every enjoyable conversation. I send my Condolences to Erik and Tanya, he spoke so proudly and fondly of you 2, and his grandchildren. And to his Mom, who was always there for him. Ed, you know how much he cared for you, and wanted to support your well-being; I hope you can take comfort in that. Gerry will be missed by so many people. I certainly will miss my merry friend Gerry. - Posted by: Shane Picken (Friend) on: Jul 20, 2024

  • I'm sure most of you do not realize that Gerry also was a tutor for Computer Programming for the Blind which was taught at the University of Manitoba. He was the best tutor I ever had. His sense of humor and his kindness will always be remembered and I am so sorry that he has passed. Only Time Will lessen the hurt. I did not have the pleasure of working directly with Gerry but I would run into him once in awhile when I was working at the U. It was always a pleasure to have a short chat. I will say prayers for him, his family and friends. God bless you all. - Posted by: Delphine Kinvig (Former student and co-worker) on: Jul 20, 2024
