Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMERVYN LYLE FAROUGH
It is with heavy hearts and much love that our family announces the passing of Mervyn Farough on July 20, 2024, just three days before his 95th birthday.
Merv will be missed by his loving wife, Gail; four children - Douglas (Alison), Dawn, Cheryl (Allen), Lorraine (Ian); his sister, Eileen (Rick) and brother, Bev (Linda); eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Merv was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Ada (nee Blaine) Farough; his brothers, Lorne (Joyce), Lloyd (Lydia), and Glen, as well as his son-in-law Martin Whittles.
Merv was born in Stockton, Manitoba on July 23, 1929. After high school, he worked as a receptionist at Brandon General Hospital to make money to attend Normal School in Winnipeg. He met his wife, Gail, at Young United Church and they married there on August 31, 1956. Merv and Gail met lifelong friends at Young United, many of whom joined them later at Sturgeon Creek United Church. Time with friends was spent playing bridge and dancing.
Merv was a teacher at the beginning and the end of his career, but most of his work time was spent developing the St. James-Assiniboia School Division Media Centre which began as a very small office distributing a few films to the schools in the Division. For 19 years, Merv worked to expand the Media Centre into something large and meaningful and this was one of his proudest career accomplishments. In mid-career, Merv went back to school, this time to the University of Winnipeg, where he worked on his Bachelor of Arts degree, a few courses at a time, so that his studies would not interfere with work and family.
Merv loved art. He taught ceramics at night school for many years and his ceramic pieces as well as his oil paintings, graced the homes of friends and family. He was also a passionate gardener who spent many happy hours working on vegetable and flower gardens. When Merv and Gail decided it was time to move into the Terrace in the St. James Kiwanis Village, Merv filled their tiny patio with pots of flowers. Merv spent 10 happy years at the Terrace making many new friends and playing numerous games of cards and shuffleboard.
As per Merv's wishes, no service will be held. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Drs. Alvin Schroeder and Wayne Poon for many years of dedicated care. Donations in Mervyn's name may be made to a charity of your choice.

Mervin Farough was my Grade 1 teacher at Springbrook School near Austin in 1947-48. I recall him as a handsome young man in a jacket, white shirt and tie. Somehow, he managed to capably teach thirty or more students in eight grades as a 18-year old. It is wonderful to read of his long, well-lived time on this Earth. And now, I am going to complete this with my name and academic credentials, something that I hardly ever do today, but a testament to the good start in Mr. Farough's Grade 1 class: Darwin Anderson, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of Saskatchewan - Posted by: Darwin Anderson (Former student) on: Jul 27, 2024

Condolences to Gail and the family. Merv was a fine co-worker in library and medica services in St. James, while I worked in Winnipeg. It was always a pleasure to stop in for a policy or program chat, and time to catch up on developments in each other's division work. I liked his warm and friendly approach to all aspects of the work, and in his relationship with colleagues. It was a pleasure to meet him at Sturgeon Creek United Church too. Rest in peace, dear friend. - Posted by: Gerald R Brown (Co-worker) on: Jul 27, 2024

We read Melvyn’s obituary with appreciation and also regret. Our first association with Melvyn was in Stockton many, many years ago and continued when we came to Winnipeg. Our regret is letting that friendship lapse. We remember, our old friend as a sincere, gracious man with an inclusive smile. Our thoughts are with Gail and her family, as they remember and adjust to this new reality. Peace be with you. Bob and Muriel Kenyon. - Posted by: Bob and Muriel Kenyon (Friend) on: Jul 27, 2024
