RYAN (ERNEST) PORTEOUS

With his beloved wife Irene and three daughters by his side, Ryan Porteous quietly passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

Ryan was 87 years old, born and raised in St. James, Winnipeg on December 1, 1936. Ryan and Irene travelled extensively around the world to escape the winter cold and were always up for an adventure.

Ryan was a lifelong Birder who enjoyed nothing more than setting out at dawn with his "birding buddies". In later years, he counted on his beloved Irene who was always ready to drive him on his "Birding Counts" or to witness the spring and fall migrations. Nature and music were a huge part of Ryan’s life. He had a special place in his heart for "The Big Valley" and Riding Mountain National Park. He loved to write songs, play his guitar and worked hard to master the banjo.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Irene, daughters, Susan (Jan), Penny (Ricky), Karen (Jim); granddaughters, Kaitlyn (Daniel), Michelle (Christian) and Leah; step-granddaughters, Kaylee, Alexa, and his brother Ken (Roberta) along with the rest of our family, good friends and neighbours.

A celebration of Ryan’s life will be held at a later time.

  • Where to begin...every trip to Winnipeg always included checking in with auntie Irene and uncle Ryan. Always witty and resourceful, loved making martinis, birding, watching sports and music! I recall a time when Leah and I came to Wpg and met Porteouses at the arena for an AC/DC tailgate party. We literally partied outside the concert listening to rock and roll, Ryan with his mickey in his pocket. What a guy. Great, great times!! I think back to the fun Halloween parties, pool parties, and then there was Cozumel. We laughed so hard, made such great memories rooming with those two. He made every event fun, memorably outrageous. Like the time I drove to a celebration of life and enroute hit a round about leaving the city, I did take it pretty fast and said "hold on" but to everyone that day, I almost killed them said uncle Ernest...will miss you like crazy love Cathy - Posted by: Cathy richards (Neice) on: Sep 17, 2024

  • My Uncle Ryan, was a cool guy. He loved music, played guitar in a band. He always had a great laugh, and enjoyed telling us stories. He travelled world wide, Australia, African Safari, Mexico, St Kitts, and probably many more places. I started bird watching, only because Ryan and Irene, would go every year for the annual bird counts. Thanks for the memories, I'll see you on the other side. - Posted by: Marvin Tanasychuk (Nephew) on: Sep 03, 2024

  • Aunty Irene, Susan, Penny, Karen and families... I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Uncle Ryan. I would like to offer my condolences to you all. I have fond memories of coming for visits to your place when we were younger and gathering at Aunty's Mary's in Sarto!! Uncle Ryan always had a smile, a Hello and how are you doing! Always know that you will have the memories in your heart to keep forever. It is very hard to have a loving husband, dad, and grandfather leave our lives, but you will always have a moment when you will believe that he is near when you need him most. Take care of one another. Our prayers are with you. Merv and Brenda and family - Posted by: Brenda and Merv Mihaychuk and family (Niece) on: Aug 26, 2024
