DUNCAN LEIGH REID

November 20, 1942 - August 7, 2024

Peacefully with his family by his side, Duncan passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on August 7, 2024, at the age of 81 years.

He was predeceased by his father Henry in 1978, and his mother Erna in 2015.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sandy, son Todd (Renelle), daughter Tricia (Keith), grandchildren, Everett, Lachlan, Kate, and Bryn, his sister Sharon, nieces, Cheryl, Karen, Jennifer and their families, good family friend Marie, and many close friends.

Duncan spent most of his career with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, retiring in 2002. Duncan loved spending his time at the family cottage at Gull Lake, travelling to Maui, Hawaii with family and friends, volunteering at Bethel Community Church, and especially by cheering his grandchildren on by watching hours of football, and by buying copious amounts of Girl Guide cookies.

A celebration of Duncan’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Concordia Hospital ER, as well as the ER and 6th floor doctors and nurses at St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I came on as an inspector in the 80s and Duncan was one of my first training supervisors at Burns plant. Upon meeting him he was very friendly and had a mischievous smile, but a friendly smile still the same. He was a great teacher and a few of us would come to his house for classes. We had to write a Ottawa inspection exam and Duncan tutored us. He was very calm, knowledgeable and had made great coffee. He as one of the bright ones when you came to work and great to work with, talk with and have him guide you. The world lost a great man..........He was a joy to work with when we were Primary products inspector. To the family sorry for your loss. • I worked with Duncan in the ‘80s. I always found him, conscientious, sincere, very knowledgable & very helpful. The ‘on the job’ training that Duncan provided laid the ground work for my 35 year career. He wanted to make a difference……….and he did! So sorry for your loss. He will be remembered. - Posted by: Sharon Amort (Work related) on: Aug 26, 2024

  • We wish Sandy, Todd and Tricia and their families our most sincere condolences. Duncan was a great and kind man, always good for a laugh and always there to help his Sister and my mom. He will be greatly missed by many. Love to you all in this difficult time. Annie and Mike. - Posted by: Annie Hallson & Mike Cousins (Family friends) on: Aug 26, 2024

  • Duncan was a soft spoken man, one you’ll recognize as a Christian from his faithful service and cheerful disposition. I recall stacking heavy chairs at church with him despite his arm injury, he still insisted he was fine. He was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes! His sense of compassion and willingness to give cheerfully were his outstanding witness to everyone who knows him. His love and dedication to his family were clearly exemplary. One who knows his Lord intimately, and you can’t help but be cheered by his company. Duncan has entered his well deserved rest. By God’s mercy we shall meet again! - Posted by: David Tan (Friend) on: Aug 25, 2024

  • I met Duncan & Sandy many, many years ago when they moved into the house next door. I am feeling a loss knowing that my good neighbour and friend has passed away. I can't imagine a man with as many marvelous characteristics as Duncan had. I never saw him grumpy or unfriendly - he always had a smile and made you feel like you were talking to your best friend. My feelings go out to Sandy, Todd, Trisha and all the family - please know that I am thinking of you. - Posted by: Barbara Gifford (neighbour ) on: Aug 24, 2024

  • My condolences, I worked with Duncan in the ‘90s. He was my lifeline and go to person. His knowledge, kindness and common sense was amazing. I honestly don’t think I would have made it through without his guidance. He has left a lasting impression on my life. So very sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Rosemary Postey (Work) on: Aug 24, 2024

  • I first met Duncan over 30 years ago and liked him right away. He was a common sense guy in a non common sense time with CFIA. Sorry to hear he has passed. I have nothing but fond memories of our multiple interactions. - Posted by: Andy Van Patter (Friend through work) on: Aug 24, 2024
