NORMA JEAN RITCHIE

It is with great sorrow we announce the death of Norma Jean Ritchie (nee Schuppert) on August 22, 2024, at the age of 99. Her loving husband Gordon, and daughter Linda Ross predeceased Mom.

Mom was born on April 28, 1925, and grew up in Gretna, Manitoba, moving to the big city of Winnipeg to attend technical school in the 1940s living in a boarding house on Balmoral Street. Mom met Dad on a blind date at a Halloween dance and married on February 1, 1947. Mom and Dad moved to Transcona when it was being developed, purchasing a home on Edward Street in 1961. Mom was proud of her Transcona roots, participating in float parades with her girlfriends during the Hi Neighbour festival while in her 80s.

As a couple, they travelled for Dad’s union work, going to Shriners events, Grey Cup games, Curling Bonspiels, and spending time at their trailer at Tall Timber Lodge fishing and enjoying cocktails. Mom got her driver’s license later in life, which gave her freedom to pursue her passions of golfing and curling up until her 80s. She was a super fan of Jennifer Jones, Manitoba’s Champion Curler. Mom loved gardening and flowers, passing that gene onto her children and grandchildren.

In her later years, Mom was happiest whenever she went SHOPPING ANYWHERE; her fashion sense was always current. When casinos opened up, many hours were spent playing the machines and bingo, while catching up with people she met there. Mom spoke in her later years about the fact you lose so many friends when you live a long life, and the need to continue making friends.

Her son, daughter, seven grandchildren along with their spouses and partners, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, and other extended family survive.

Following Mom’s wishes, there will be no formal service, and a private family gathering will be held. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • To the Ritchie family. I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of a loved one. I was your Moms cleaning lady with Molly Maid. She was such a friendly happy person. I cleaned for your Mom on Edward and Regent Avenue. I would go see her when she went into the seniors place. She will be missed. Take care! • To all Norma’s family. My deepest condolences in the loss Norma. I curled at Transcona along with many of our friends, we did skits and just had so much fun in the old days at the old club and the new one and yes the older we get the more friends we lose. I will miss our phone calls and Norma was so sharp right up to the end. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal but Love leaves memories no one can steal. May all your wonderful memories somehow sustain you all in your time of sorrow. RIP my dear friend you have earned your wings and now will be in heaven with Gordon and Linda waiting with open arms to greet you. - Posted by: Marlyn Harding (Friend) on: Aug 31, 2024
