WILLIAM (BILL) RICHARD STOVEL
Sadly, we lost William (Bill/Willy) Richard Stovel to a brief battle with an aggressive cancer that took his life painlessly, August 26, 2024. During his time at Riverview Health Centre he kept his wit and positive attitude.
He is survived by his three children, John Eben Stovel (Manon and Delilah), Lauren Allison Stovel (Dennis) and Kathleen Gwen Stovel (Shane, Birdie and Finn), his brother Carl (Sue, Laura, Tamara) and sisters Trish and Marnie (Ray and Jeff) and long-time friend Janet Jean (Angela and Amie).
Born in Vancouver November 11, 1946, to a military family, Parents Helen M. (Govan) and Gen. Richard C. Stovel, Bill moved often, spending time in Virginia, England, Cold Lake and Colorado Springs. He attended high school at St. John’s Ravenscourt and enrolled in law school at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.
After graduation Bill worked as a lawyer for the City of Winnipeg, but it was working as a brakeman for the CN Railway and “driving truck” for Ron Paul Garden Centre that he enjoyed the most.
Bill had a love for sports, competing in track and field, hockey, football at UofM, and fishing at Caddy Lake and Lake George. Golfing at Rossmere, Pine Ridge and Falcon Lake was a joyous yet frustrating adventure throughout his life.
More than sport, he loved a road trip. Bill often set out in a questionable vehicle to travel thousands of miles on a whim and always with little advance planning. Preferring to drive to Mazatlán in January to spend the winter with his sisters and the Bridge group. The stories of the people he met and places he went would be hard to believe if told by someone else.
His favourite place was Caddy Lake with family and friends, old and new. He spent many hours with “The Boys” at the Main, playing Bridge. All day pontoon rides, sunsets and late-night dinners were replaced by sunrise coffee and swimming with grandkids in recent years.
The last decade Bill turned his attention to his kids and their families. Happy to bring dinner, walk/watch the dogs, or just “sit and kibitz”. He had a new purpose, to be the best Father and Grampa he could be.
Other than his family, he was most proud of his friendships, all of which were independent of each other. He made quick, deep, long-lasting connections with everyone he met. The Kanooks, Black Sparrow, The DC, LGFC, Eben’s MMJHL Fort Garry Twins Alumni, each knew Willy in their own way. There are so many people it is impossible to mention them all, but you know who you are!
This connectedness did not stop at humans. Bill had a profound connection with dogs. It would seem as though he spoke their language, kind and loyal. The Stovels are dog people. Bill was the Alpha.
We would like to thank the staff at Victoria General Hospital, Palliative Care and Riverview Health Centre for their professionalism and caring during his last few weeks.
We invite all that knew William (Willy, Bill) R. Stovel to gather at Southwood Golf and Country Club, 80 Rue des Ruines du Monastere, Thursday October 24, 2024, from 4:00p.m. to 7:00 pm for a Celebration of Life. There will be a video montage, a few speeches, and an open mic for any that would like to tell a tale, appropriate or not.
Please contact Eben at eben@protectallinc.com and we can ensure there is enough time for everyone. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Cash Bar. Lots of time to raise a glass. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

My most profound condolences to all of Bill's family and many friends. Just learned of his passing from our mutual friend Rick Lauder. My heartfelt best to Bill's brother Carl. We all attended St. John's Ravenscourt together and the school will never be the same since our collective departure! Never knew Bill to have had a down moment, as he was a constant source of positivity, good humour, fun and sporting superiority. One would never hear another laugh so unique or inspiring! Sad to hear of his passing but always buoyed by the memory of his laugh, his grin and sense of mischief. Rest in peace buddy....you more than earned it ! - Posted by: Chris Dougall (Friend ) on: Oct 25, 2024

Bill will be remembered by Richard for their early years at Caddy Lake and at Falcon lake where the two families often got together for 'fun times' . Bill's mother often dropped Bill off at Falcon Lake where the two boys, would play golf at the Falcon Lake Golf Course. Our condolences to all of Bill's family at this time. May all those fun-filled times everyone had knowing Bill stay with all of you. Love and Affection, Millie and Richard Stovel - Posted by: Richard and Millie Stovel (relatives) on: Sep 15, 2024

Eban, Bettie and I extend our sincere condolences to you and the family on your dad’s passing. Your dad was one of a kind. His laugh, sense of humour and his joy of life will be fondly remembered. Whether it was on the ice, in the dressing room, at Caddy Lake with our family or “the boys” he was the same laid back guy who everyone loved. Unfortunately we will not be making it to Wpg for the COL but we will be there in spirit and raising a glass. I'm sure there is a team looking for a lanky, smooth skating, right hand shot defenseman. Thanks for all the laughs "Willy". Rest in Peace. Al Abel Hockey Team-mate. - Posted by: Alan Abel (Friend) on: Sep 14, 2024

Bill and I were classmates in high school at SJR. He taught me how to high jump and pole vault. He was the best at both. In the summer of 1965 I travelled to France to visit him. We toured all over Europe in his family car. We slept mostly on the ground or in the vehicle. We had an absolute blast! Europe on $5 a day. I miss his laugh. And, I will miss him even though I last saw him about 20 years ago. - Posted by: Rick Lauder (Friend) on: Sep 01, 2024
