DORIS IRENE HOLMES

November 28, 1932 -

September 20, 2024

Our dear Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma Doris Irene Holmes passed away on September 20, 2024 at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 91.

Doris was born to James Oliver Freedy and Eleanora Charlotte Fisher in Unity, SK, and lived in Cutknife for the first five years of her life. She then moved to Winnipeg, where she grew up in EK with five brothers and sisters. She married Bernard Holmes in 1951.

Doris was employed by the Provincial Government in various departments and was very involved with the MGEU, including being on the Board of Directors, of which she took great pride. Doris was pro-union and a vocal advocate for workers’--particularly women’s—rights.

Doris enjoyed her cottage at Malachi, ON, for 40 years with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Malachi was always a special place for Doris and her family.

Doris spent her final years at Dakota House, where she made new friends, especially Barbara and Yolande. She loved her YMCA group.

Doris was predeceased by her son, Ronald Holmes; her infant son, Thomas James; four of her siblings; and, former spouse Bernard. She is survived by her children Betty (Ron) Laurencelle, Bruce, Ian, and Leslie (Edward) Fitzpatrick; her grandchildren Alyson, Sarah, Rosanne, Susanne, Shannon, Ryan, Taylor, Jillian, and Josie; her great-grandchildren Connor, Lauren, Esme, Hayden, Levi, Micah, Mateo, Severin, Phoenix, Rhea, Bear, Evren, MorningStar, and Lachlan; her brother, James; and several nieces and nephews.

Mom was the matriarch of our family and she will be greatly missed. Thank you to the staff at the Grace and Seven Oaks Hospitals for their care and compassion.

Respecting Doris’ wishes, a private family gathering will be held to celebrate her long life.

Ethical Death Care in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My heart is broken. 💔😢 You were the best friend a gal could have. It was my absolute pleasure to have worked with you all those years. We had some wonderful times together. I will never forget my amazing vacation of a lifetime, cruising the high seas with you and our Captain Ron. Such fun. Such great memories. I often look back on all the photos of our fun time. Ron was generous to a fault; he made me feel like one of the family…may he rest in peace.😔 One day, you and Ron and I will sail that ship again…around the world this time.😊 My truly heartfelt condolences to the entire Holmes family. I love you all. ❤️ Rest easy now, my beautiful friend. See you at our next port of call.😘 - Posted by: Samantha Rothwell (Friend) on: Sep 30, 2024

  • It was sad to see this in Saturday's paper. I am so sorry to hear of Doris' passing. I remember visiting her and cousin Bernie with my mom and dad and brother when we were visiting family in Winnipeg and seeing my second cousins. I remember Bernie had said he wanted a big family. As we were living in Montreal at the time we were not able to see each other on a regular basis. My deepest and most heartfelt condolences to each one of you. I tried to contact Doris after I moved back to Winnipeg with my husband and two daughters in 1998 but was never able to meet with her. I remember how tall she was, and how much fun she was the few times that I had been in her presence. So very sorry for the loss of your mom, grandma, and great-grandma. - Posted by: Susan Holmes Nash (Cousin) on: Sep 29, 2024

  • I’m so sorry to hear of Doris’ passing and send condolences from myself and Peter to all her family. What a beautiful picture of Doris. It really shows the kindness, wisdom, quiet humor and heart of this wonderful woman. Her commitment and support of working people, particularly woman was so important. Rest in peace Doris. - Posted by: Ellen Olfert (Union sister and friend) on: Sep 28, 2024

  • I am so sad to see this announcement. I worked with Doris in the labour movement both when I was a rep at the MGEU and also when I was at the MFL. I could always count on Doris whenever there was an issue of unfairness but worked closely with her on the Women's committee. My condolences to her family and friends. Her passing leaves a hole in my heart and a huge gap in her community. Rest in peace my sister. - Posted by: Susan Hart-Kulbaba (friend) on: Sep 28, 2024
