GORDON SOMERSET SMITH

July 15, 1948 - October 18, 2024

After a lengthy battle with Dementia and Parkinson’s, Gordon passed away peacefully the morning of October 18, 2024, at the age of 76, with his daughters by his side.

He was predeceased by wife Dianne (nee Lafrenière) and brother Michael. Survived by daughters, Ainslie (Jonny), Andrea, granddaughter Maeve, sisters-in-law, Brenda, Lorraine (Lee), Yvette (Earl) and many extended family and friends.

Born to parents John and Evelyn. Gord grew up in Silver Heights attending Strathmillan School and Silver Heights Collegiate. He completed his Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba, 1971. Gord and Dianne met at the Centennial Concert Hall and married June 16, 1973. They had 40 happy years together; taking trips, going to the lake, and raising their two daughters until her passing in 2010.

Gord spent 30 years with Manitoba Telephone System (MTS), working in Selkirk, Portage La Prairie and Winnipeg. A long-time member of The Rotary Club, The Antique Automobile Association and a volunteer with Junior Achievement.

Gord grew up spending time at Wanasing Beach with his parents and eventually built a cottage for his own family in 1988. He spent summers tinkering, leisurely finishing the cottage, while still enjoying time boating and relaxing with close friends. He will be fondly remembered for his dad jokes, good-humoured nature and his enormous heart.
