DARIA MCLEAN
Daria McLean (Gaborieau) (nee Paskewitz) passed away on February 7, 2023, at the age of 74, after a short battle with cancer. She was a wonderful wife, mother and sister and giver of care to her community and beyond. She began her career as a registered nurse in Winnipeg and retired as manager of Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
Daria was a woman of integrity, who believed that volunteering was essential to living a full life. After retiring from the nursing profession, she and her husband Jim were enthusiastic volunteers at Assiniboine Park, and she was deeply involved in volunteer projects in the Dominican Republic (DR).
Daria loved travelling far and wide, from Africa, Europe, China and Hong Kong to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Canada, from coast to coast. When visiting the DR on a holiday, she saw a need to support local projects and began her multi-year dedication to providing humanitarian aid in the DR. On her eighth and final trip, she took on the job of directing the medical team she had supported. She continued to support projects and individuals in the DR for many years.
Among Daria's greatest enjoyments was spending time with her husband, sons, stepsons, granddaughter and extended family. She loved to entertain, whether in her home, beautiful backyard or rented summer cottages. All were welcome. From Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to regular family gatherings, nothing made her happier than having a house filled with loved ones.
Daria was both fun and funny. She had an infectious laugh that filled the room, hugs that wrapped you in her warmth, the ability to make friends quickly wherever she travelled, and a gift for making everyone feel at ease, qualities that made her a special person to all who knew her. She will always remain in our hearts.
