On December 1, 2024, Gerald Wilfred Coueslan, aged 79, passed away peacefully at Selkirk Regional Health Centre with his wife, son, and daughter-in-law by his side.
Gerry was born in Indian Head, SK, on August 16, 1945, to Leon and Rita (nee Bonneville) Coueslan. The second of four children, he was raised on the family farm just south of Wolseley, SK. After attending Campion College in Regina for Grade 12, Gerry went on to medical school at the University of Saskatchewan.
After graduation Gerry went to Flint, Michigan, to do his internship and the first year of his residency. He completed the final three years of his residency at St. Boniface Hospital and the Health Science Centre. While at Hurley Hospital in Flint, he met his future wife, Sandra. The two we're happily married for 51 years.
Gerry joined the radiology department at Brandon General Hospital in 1974 and worked there for 36 years until he retired at the age of 65. He saw many changes over those years, including the addition of ultrasound, mammography, and CT-scan. For many years, he hosted a corn roast for the staff of the imaging department. In October 2003, he received the BRHA Medical Staff Meritorious Award.
Gerry enjoyed staying busy. He enjoyed carpentry and used his skills to build his kids a 2-storey playhouse, many bluebird houses, and help his neighbours build a cottage at Clear Lake. He spent many hours gardening and puttering around his Kemnay acreage on his beloved garden tractor. The family took many trips to various parts of the US and Canada in his motorhome. The family particularly enjoyed camping at Sprucewoods and skiing at Marmot basin in Jasper. This lead to a life long love of skiing for in his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed scuba diving, trying new foods, but not computers.
Following his retirement, Gerry and Sandy enjoyed traveling. They took a boat cruise down the Danube River. Playa del Carmen was a favourite place where they walked on the beaches in the morning and on Fifth Avenue in the evening often with Tom and Debbie Jennings, their good friends and neighbours. They also visited Portugal with the Jennings. Gerry and Sandy travelled to Calgary and Victoria on a regular basis to visit their grandchildren.
Gerry is survived by his wife, Sandy; his children and grandchildren — Marcia Coueslan and Rik Gray (Arran, Isla, and Torran) of Calgary, AB; Aimee Coueslan and Franz Lehrbass (Aidan, Geneviève, and Martin) of Victoria, BC; and Chris Coueslan and Tania Martins of St. Andrews, MB; his eldest brother Paul of Lloydminster, AB. He was pre-deceased by his parents and younger siblings: Elie Coueslan and Jeanette Veness.
Donations can be made in Gerry's honour to the Canadian Hemophilia Society, Manitoba Chapter at hemophiliamb.ca or Suite 324, 120 - 1400 Ellice Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3G 0J1. A celebration of life will be held in Brandon in the spring.

Gerry was my classmate in Medical School at the University of Saskatchewan Class of 69. We were friends to the extent that we had a few trips to the Cavalier pub in Saskatoon and in Winnipeg over the years. Unfortunately, I missed the famous trip to Mexico. We lost touch after graduation. Gerry was quiet and well liked. He was of the highest character and ethical conduct and I have had the greatest admiration for him. Please accept my condolences as expressed so well by John Green. George Garbe - Posted by: George Garbe (Med School Classmate) on: Feb 08, 2025

We met Sandy and Gerry in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico years ago through mutual friends. Gerry was just a great down to earth, fun loving, guy. He was the toughest person I ever met. After hip replacements he still walked those sandy beaches of Playa every day sometimes with bleeding feet. We loved going for suppers with him cause he always got different things like octopus etc. He was just a great guy to have a rum with and be around. Unfortunately his only downfall was cheering for the Roughriders. RIP Gerald. - Posted by: Jim and June Denoon (friend) on: Dec 23, 2024

My wife and I met Gerry and Sandy through their neighbours, Tom & Debbie. We spent many fun times together in Playa Del Carmen every Feb. There where a lot of happy hours, great meals and great laughs. Gerry was always there for a visit and sit for a drink around the pool and a walk on the beach. Will be missed by all his friends. - Posted by: Jim Carkener (friend) on: Dec 18, 2024

So sad to hear of Gerry’s passing. We had a small class of 41 who graduated from the College of Medicine together in 1969, and Gerry was one of us. It was a small class and we were all friends. He may have developed his love of travel after 4 of us drove almost nonstop to Mexico during a winter break. We made it as far as Mazatlan, then drove home, again almost nonstop to resume studies in Saskatoon. He was always fun to be with. Please accept my condolences, and those of other classmates that I have been in touch with. - Posted by: John Green (Med School Classmate ) on: Dec 18, 2024
