Shamaloo "Shamal" Deen, the eighth of nine children born to Emamool and Rasulan Deen - creators of the Doubles industry in Trinidad - passed away at the age of 77. His life was a testament to the resilience, vision, and enduring legacy of a family that transformed humble beginnings into a national treasure.
Shamal's journey was marked by a deep determination to honour his parents' creation of Doubles - a simple street food that blossomed into the soul of Trinidad and Tobago's culinary culture. He devoted his life to promoting and elevating Deen's Doubles, transforming it into a symbol of pride and cultural identity.
Shamal believed that one's circumstances were not a ceiling but a foundation for growth. This perspective guided him as he navigated life in two nations, pioneering businesses in Trinidad and Canada, while spreading the joy of Trinidadian cuisine and culture.
In Winnipeg, Shamal established Deen's Diner and the iconic Deen's Calypso Gardens, spaces that brought a slice of Trinidad to Canada. From his innovation of serving Doubles with knife and fork to introducing Solo beverages to western Canada, Shamal elevated the perception of his family's creation while building cultural bridges. In the later years, Shamal returned to Trinidad, rejuvenating the Deen's Doubles Depot. He brought Deen's Doubles to Winnipeg and the world because of his relentless and selfless work to continue his father's legacy, a philosophical journey of self-discovery, and cultural enrichment.
Shamal is survived by his children, Shanu, Laura, Barbara and their mother, Claudette, as well as his second wife, Nuroon, his siblings - Hamidan, Shamedan, Badru, Edool, loyal customers and the countless individuals touched by his vision and generosity. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the story of Deen's Doubles, an 88-year legacy that began in Princes Town, Trinidad in 1936.
As we bid farewell, we celebrate a life that transformed a family recipe into a symbol of perseverance and pride.

Me and Deen were business friends since 80's. Deen and Dino was well known name in the community. Many times people use to get mixed up between these two names. Some people still call me Deen. I will miss you my dear friend Deen. May you rest in piece. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Dino Tailor (Business Friends) on: Dec 23, 2024

I was given the opportunity to work for him back in 1985. (Am still also a customer of Deens) I appreciate the opportunity to have learnt from working at Deens at 18years old. It helped me grow as a person personally and in my career down the road. I with my husband now own a very successful business. I thank you for that, I believe alot of my bosses in the past have groomed me to be the person I have become in some little or big way. Thank you Shamaloo, may you rest in peace. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Jackie Touchette (1985 employee ) on: Dec 19, 2024
