ROBERT EDWARD MURPHY

1954 - 2024

On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Robert Murphy passed away at the age of 70 years, after a lengthy illness. Our grief is indescribable.

Rob was born April 2, 1954, in Carberry, Manitoba. He was the first son to Dr. Claude Murphy (deceased) and Winnifred “Peggy” Murphy (deceased). He was predeceased by two of his older sisters and their husbands - Kathleen “Kate” (Mike), and Maureen (Gerry). He is survived by his wife Anne, his sister Aileen (Greg) and brother Paul (Barbara). He is also survived by his son Sean (Danielle) and his grandson Murphy Jeddore, as well as nephew Brady (Sarah) and his children, Laura and Max, niece Brittany and honorary sister Lynne Richardson.

Robbie was well known in Winnipeg as an accomplished musician, playing in such bands as Junior Barnes and the Cadillacs, Musical Odyssey and Bentwood Rocker. He was one of those musicians who was able to play most any instrument he picked up, and a beautiful singer as well. As most musicians do, Rob felt the need to broaden his horizons – he chose to move east, eventually landing in Toronto where he met his wife and soulmate, Anne.

His talents also included a proficiency with web design – he started a successful company called Full Motion Graphics and together with his son, he designed and staged presentations for several large companies and sparked a lifelong curiosity for technology in Sean.

Rob had a huge capacity for friendship – his high school buddies (“the boys”) remain friends to this day. He took a large role in caring for his aging father (who was able to live and die in his own home), even from the great distance between Toronto and Selkirk. Robbie and Anne were great animal lovers, and shared their home with many and varied pets, with a special place in their hearts for dogs.

Rob lived his last years happily in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, with Anne. Sean and Danielle lived nearby with their son Murphy – the joy of Rob’s life was being Poppy to his grandson who, to Robbie’s delight, took an interest in people-sized pianos and guitars before he could walk. They will make sure that Poppy is remembered forever.

You are greatly missed, our darling brother, husband, father, uncle, and grandparent. A Celebration of Robbie’s life will be held in St. John’s in the summer of 2025.

The music is not in the notes,

but in the silence between.

– Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  • I really only remember being with Robert once when his family came to Yorkton to visit. We we both young maybe 12/13. I thought he was so cute looking. My oldest son Peter lives in Torino and I thought Robert still did so I thinking of trying to reconnect. Sadly it didn’t happen. I am so sorry for the loss of Robert in your lives. He was greatly loved and likewise will be greatly missed. Judy - Posted by: Judy Murphy (First cousin) on: Dec 21, 2024
