MAURICE GREGORY DANIEL CARNEY

September 14,1953 - December 10, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maurice Carney on December 10, 2024.

Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife of 17 years, Yoanna Orman, siblings Kathleen (David), Raymond (Kitty), Janine (Fletcher) and Jocelyne (Michael), mother-in-law Barbara Orman, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Gerald Carney (1993) and Mother Simone (Légaré) Carney (2011).

Maurice was born in St. Vital and moved with the family to Transcona in 1956. He graduated from Murdoch McKay High School.

Like many teenagers, he hitchhiked across the west more than once and experienced some interesting adventures.

He tried his hand at various jobs and eventually felt the calling to the priesthood. He was loved by his parishioners wherever he worked. Due to unfortunate circumstances, he left the priesthood and moved to Calgary. It is notable that he maintained friendships with many of the priests he met in Seminary. He became a landscaper and occasional handyman. His pride and joy was working at Spruce Meadows, renowned for its gardens.

He met Yoanna Orman and they married in 2007. He was over-the-moon in love, and they had many happy years together. He eventually suffered from stress and later developed pulmonary fibrosis. He maintained his faith throughout, kept a positive outlook and was accepting of the situation

The funeral will be held Friday, December 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Anthony’s of Padua Parish, 250 Burrin Street. In Winnipeg (West Kildonan) officiated by Father Dominic Yuan. A reception will follow, after which the burial will be held at Transcona Cemetery.

Cremation is being handled by Foster’s Garden Chapel in Calgary.

In lieu of flowers, you may donate to Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or a charity of your choice.

  • To the precious Carney Family. We have known each other as Ravelston Avenue neighbours for many years. Our mothers were the very best of friends. I knew Maurice as he was growing up on the street and later as a young priest who visited our family to see our father, Paul Babey, on one of his final days before he passed away. Maurice was so comforting with our father and us as family as he prayed with him and gave blessings. In later years we met Yoanna when my Mother Anna Babey and I dined at their home in Calgary. It was wonderful to see Maurice happy and settled with his awesome wife! May Maurice rest in peace in the arms of the angels for all eternity! • I will truly miss Maurice. We made many enjoyable trips together to New Orleans, California, Eastern Canada and many places here in Manitoba. We shared the same music, enjoyed gardening, great food, travel and lengthy discussions. Our strongest point of interest was Jesus Christ and his great love for us. Presiding at his funeral Mass was truly the last honor and tribute that I could offer Maurice. May his soul rest safe in the arms of the Good Shepherd. May we meet again. Father Dominic Yuen. - Posted by: Father Dominic Yuen (friend) on: Dec 27, 2024

  • What a great photo of Maurice...his warm smile exudes his gentleness and his spirit. Our last visit with Yoanna and him was in Calgary at Nick's where we shared a meal...following that were many emails and a getting to know Maurice as an adult cousin...he will be missed...
