DEBORAH NICKEL

(OMMANEY)

May 18, 1952 - December 16, 2024

After a brief battle with pneumonia, Deb sadly passed away on December 16 at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

She is deeply missed by her sister Lenore; niece Terrilynn; stepmother Sylvia Ommaney; her extended family, Margaret (Wayne), Franklin and William; her dear friends, Paula, Cheryl and her beloved “Golden Girls,” Melody, Noreen, and Mary Ann.

A master art educator, Deb was instrumental in creating an unparalleled art program during her 34 years at St. Mary’s Academy, through her dedication, vision, and expectation of excellence of her cherished students.

In lieu of flowers, friends may donate blood or send a monetary donation to the Canadian Blood Services in Deb’s name.

A Celebration of Life is planned for the Spring, 2025, in Vernon and in Winnipeg.

  • Mrs. Nickel was one of those teachers who left a lasting impression. She was my favourite at SMA—she had such a passion for art history and her dry sense of humour was so appreciated. I had a bit of a habit of goofing off in class... I remember on more than one occasion, her standing behind me, with a stern look on her face, reminding me to put pen to paper or scolding me for not focusing. Though, you could always tell she was holding back a smile. I’ll never forget those moments when she'd call me out, asking me to come to the kiln room for a “talk” in front of the whole class. The class would go silent and everyone giving me looks of pity. Of course, when I’d get there, she'd break into a grin, and we'd just end up chatting and laughing. Then, before I’d head back to my desk, she’d give me a wink and tell me to put on a fake “dejected” look, so I wouldn’t influence the rest of the class! I’m sorry for being such a pain, Mrs. Nickel, but I’ll always be grateful for the laughs and the lessons. You truly were an incredible teacher, and you will be dearly missed! - Posted by: Leigh Vossen (Student) on: Jan 27, 2025

  • My best memories of SMA were in Ms. Nickel’s classroom. One day each week a few of us had double art, followed by a double spare, and then lunch — that meant 5 straight hours of uninterrupted art and it was the absolute best. Thank you Ms. Nickel for nurturing my creativity and for introducing me to the fascinating world of art history. I’m glad you got to retire in BC as you always planned. Sending my condolences to family and friends. - Posted by: Melissa Suchit (Student) on: Jan 04, 2025

  • Condolences to friends and family, and all who loved her. I was a student of Ms. Nickel’s at St. Mary’s Academy (grad ‘92) and have fond memories of her love of art! A true professional with a passion for leading and inspiring many young women. Rest in paradise, Ms. Nickel! - Posted by: Angeline Lim (Student ) on: Dec 28, 2024
