It is with great sadness that I share the sudden passing of Dave, my beloved partner and the love of my life on January 23, 2025, at the age of 75.
Dave leaves to cherish his memory, his lifelong partner Linda Malcolmson, brother Dan (Edie), sister Lynn Wittmeier (Dennis), cousin Susan McLaughlin and family, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Judy and Sandy Fowler, sister-in-law Karen Stepaniuk, nieces Andrea Haynes (Steve), Katie Fowler (Richard Lennon), Ashley Stepaniuk (Rob Sokalski), nephews Peter Stepaniuk (Jeff McCurdy), Shea Thevenot (Dani and Tony), Jared Malcolmson (Jess Nichols), grandnieces Olivia, Clara, Emma and Piper, and the many members of the Card family.
Dave grew up in West Kildonan, three doors down from Kildonan Park which remained a special place to him all his life. One of his greatest loves was ensuring the birds were well fed in the winter, at the park, at home, and at the lake.
Dave spent his career working in the family business, Progressive Manufacturing. After retiring, Dave worked part-time at Gaspard, travelling across Canada, handing out gowns at graduation ceremonies, a job he especially enjoyed because it allowed him to meet so many young people.
Dave loved playing and coaching hockey, but his greatest love was spending his summers at Gull Lake which he did for 75 years. He especially loved sailing, taking pride when he won a race but gracious and happy for others in defeat. Always wanting to be the fastest on the lake, Dave took great joy in collecting and working on the next sailboat that he would add to his fleet.
Besides their summers at the lake, Dave and Linda spent time sailing on Lake of the Woods and boating on the Red. Many winters were spent in Florida and Mexico with trips to Banff to ski. Together they travelled to Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, always returning with great stories about the people they met and the adventures they had.
Dave was never idle. He loved being challenged and always had a long list of projects he was working on, both at home and at the lake. Even when he took a break from whatever he was working on, he spent it working on a Sudoku. At the end of the day, he was happiest having a drink with friends.
Dave had a great sense of humour, a big heart, and was always happy to lend a helping hand or give advice when asked. He especially enjoyed the young people in his life, always taking an interest in what they were doing. Dave was loved by so many and will be missed by his family, his many lifelong friends, the boys at the Curtis and the shop, and his sailing buddies at the lake.
Dave, you left us way too soon, but you will remain forever in our hearts.
Thank you to our neighbours, the paramedics, and the medical staff at St Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion. Thanks also for the unwavering love and support from family and our many friends.
A celebration of Dave's life will take place at a later date.

Linda, saddened by the news. We spent many a “work” lunch meeting as the Steelheads (nicknamed by Charlie back in Mr. Streamer days) mostly at the Thunderbird or at Larters. We would meet well into the afternoon solving the problems of the world and sharing a lot of laughs. We all appreciated to hear Dave’s thoughtful opinions and we especially appreciated his humour. I regret not spending more time with Dave. He will be missed. - Posted by: George Pic (Friend and Customer) on: Feb 18, 2025

Our deepest condolences to you Linda, Dan and your extended families. Our bond grew over our mutual love of boating, specifically sailing and especially Flying Dutchman’s and C&C’s. We fondly remember our days spent at Gull Lake, especially when Bob and Ed got hold of a bunch of bottle rockets. I probably never got to say thank you enough for all the time you spent during my recovery and all the crappy lunches you had to endure at the HSC Speaking of lunches, I can’t begin to count the number of times we ate and drank at the Curtis. Always good times. Well the next round is on me buddy. Rest in peace. We will miss you. Tom and Joanne. My email address is tkhaldane@shaw.ca - Posted by: Tom (Friend) on: Feb 17, 2025

Linda We were deeply saddened to learn of Dave’s sudden passing. Please accept our sincere condolences. Your obituary captured his zest for life so accurately. As a fellow sailor at the lake we were all thrilled when he decided to enter the Regatta this summer one last time with the mighty EScow. He out sailed every one on the water that day and he was in his element. That will be our most recent lasting memory of him. Thank you for sharing him with us. We are deeply saddened and shocked to hear about Dave. What a guy he was! Always kind, always smiling and I will never forget how genuinely happy and interested he was to engage in a conversation anytime we bumped into him at the lake. Linda we are so sorry for what could only be a monumental loss - Dave was truly one of a kind. Thinking of you ❤️ Carla and Ray - Posted by: Ray and Carla (Friends) on: Feb 15, 2025

Our young family first met Dave, on a cottage invitation from work peer extraordinaire (and Dave’s partner in crime) Linda. My pre-teen kids were so excited to visit their lake front cottage, and Linda and Dave were so incredible welcoming and generous. Even though you may have met Dave for the first time, it seemed like you always knew him. Down to earth, genuine, and hilarious. No, surprise, as that was Linda, in the office and outsides the office. He will definitely be missed, but we will always have that weekend memory. - Posted by: Lee Huscroft (Friends) on: Feb 15, 2025
