It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Damir Mirkovic, loving father and husband on February 17, 2025. He passed away peacefully at 91 years of age in hospital surrounded by his immediate family.
Damir was born in Glina, Croatia (former Yugoslavia), the only child of Jovan and Marija Mirkovic. He had a happy early childhood until he tragically lost his father when he was 7 years old during WWII. He then lost his mother to illness when he was 15 years of age after which he was raised by his grandmother. He graduated from University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law in 1957. After passing the Bar examination he taught at the School of Law, University of Zagreb for several years after which he was given the opportunity to study abroad. He attained a M.A. in Sociology form Brandies University, Massachusetts, USA in 1968, then immigrated to Canada where he received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Alberta and became a Canadian citizen.
He worked as Professor of Sociology at Brandon University for 31 years where the study of sociology of genocide was his scholarly focus. Upon retirement in 2000 he was honored to be granted the designation Professor Emeritus by Brandon University. He remained academically active for the next 20 years after retirement publishing numerous articles in several leading academic journals focusing on the study of Genocide in the Balkans during WWII and mentoring Ph.D. students in this field of study.
After retirement he moved with his wife to Port Moody, BC to be near his only adult child. Throughout his life he enjoyed an outdoor life of camping and canoeing in Manitoba as well as travelling with his wife and was grateful for the opportunities afforded by his life in Canada. He was extremely fond of many forms of art, including classical music, opera, and the visual arts. His hobbies included photography, study of art history and languages. He had a great love for his beloved dogs.
Damir is survived and missed greatly by his wife of 53 years Ana Mirkovic, his only daughter Tatjana Mirkovic, and his son-in-law Duncan Boggs all of Port Moody, BC and several life-long friends who still reside in Brandon, MB.
At his request, there will not be a funeral service. He will be laid to rest at Robinson Memorial Park Cemetery in Coquitlam, BC. A celebration of life gathering will be held March 16, 2025, from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in Port Moody, BC at The Sentinel 290 Newport Drive, Port Moody, BC where he lived for the last 18 years with his wife.
