Susan Funk, 83, of Winkler, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, at Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC), after her battle with cancer.
She leaves to mourn, her husband Henry; her brothers, Henry Dueck, Harold Dueck and wife Regina; her children, Doug, daughter-in-law Darlene Harp, Harold and wife Diane, Jon and wife Rhonda, Karen Peters and husband Bob; her grandchildren, Kris Campana and husband Greg, Nick and wife Brittany, Harrison and wife Cloe, Mackenzie Schwarz and husband Josiah, Ryan and Fiancée Michelle, Daniel, Mikayla and Josh; great-grandchildren, Kade, Grant, Franklin and Bennet; sisters-in-law, Herta Funk, Evelyn Rempel, Linda Kliewer; brother-in-law Neil Wiebe and many nieces, nephews and friends.
The Dueck family moved to Steinbach in 1952 and from there to Winnipeg in 1955. Susan attended school in Winnipeg, and when she graduated from high school, she worked for a few years at the Bank of Nova Scotia. In March of 1962, Susan married Peter Kliewer and became a member of the Kliewer Clan. Eleven months later, Douglas was born on January 26, 1963. In May of that year, Peter died from brain cancer. The Kliewer Clan became a huge part of her life and continued to be a support for her family until her passing.
She met Henry and they were married on September 11, 1965, and were married for 59 years. Over the years, three more children, Harold, Jon and Karen, were added to the family of Susan and Henry. Things were busy in the Funk household, but Susan still found time to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.
When Karen was in school full-time, Susan went to the local high school to take Biology and then attended Red River College where she graduated with honours as a Registered Nurse. She worked for 20 years at the Grace Hospital and then retired to look after Henry’s mother who suffered from a severe stroke and needed 24 hour care.
Susan’s favourite place was the family cottage, fondly called “Paradise Cove”. It was located on an Island in Shoal Lake, Ontario. Over the years many family members and friends visited the Cottage, enjoying many summer activities, food and fellowship. Henry’s Mom, “OMA”, also enjoyed being at the cottage and Susan figured out a way to bring OMA to the cottage to enjoy her final summer there. That was great!
When Henry retired in 2004, they moved to Winkler on the advice of Jon and Rhonda’s oldest son Ryan. Susan enjoyed life and good health in Winkler until June 2024 when she was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Susan was always a caring and giving person, and the transition from giving care to receiving care was difficult for her, but she adapted and became very thankful for the care that Henry provided at home, and later the care in the hospital. Henry heard a couple of the hospital staff talking about how they enjoyed going into Susan’s room as she was always grateful for what they did for her and was always ready with a joke.
Susan will be missed and told Henry that she would be waiting for him in Heaven to join her. Many thanks to all the people at Boundary Trails Health Centre. They showed so much compassion and empathy to both Susan and Henry, it was greatly appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the charity of your choice.
Celebration of Susan’s life will take place at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, 750-15th Street, Winkler, Manitoba, Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.

Had the pleasure of working with Sue at the grace and going into the ICU course with her. Always could see the light side of things. Susan Anton and I made the fancy sandwiches for Doug’s wedding. A lovely person and a compassionate Nurse. - Posted by: Joanne jennings (Friend and coworker) on: Mar 08, 2025
