JAMES KEITH GLENN STINSON (JIM)

Jim and I first met in the fall of 1987 when he was stationed at Clear Lake. Our first date was elk calling, in the middle of the night, with the moon dancing through the mist over the water. It was magical. It was the beginning of a partnership made of dreams, and a love for each other beyond measure.

After 3 long and challenging years of fighting Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer, Jim passed peacefully in the early morning of Sunday, March 2nd, with his wife and soulmate Darlene lying next to him, and his sister Barbie by his side. He had been admitted to Winnipeg's Health Science Centre to try a new treatment. He expected that a few days later he would be home and out ice fishing again. But our last hope for success was not to be.

Jim was predeceased by his brother Barry and brother-in-law Dave Kingsley. Survived by his most adoring wife Dar, his sister Barbara Kingsley and her children, James (Hilary), Heather (Darcy), Tricia (Nick), Christa (Jeremy) and their families, sister-in-law Karen Stinson, his niece Mel (Mike) and her brother Chuck, and Karen's daughter Shelley.

Jim was from southern Ontario, the Bruce Peninsula, but once he joined the RCMP and was stationed in Manitoba, he never looked back. He fell in love with Manitoba and the hunting and fishing opportunities it offered.

Jim was very proud of his 30 year career with the RCMP. He loved to help people. He travelled to India twice. He attended the FBI Academy. He helped countless people along the way, and made friends wherever he was stationed. Shortly after we were married, while stationed in Norway House, he had to coordinate the evacuation of the entire community due to wildfires. He played a large part in the disastrous Flood of the Century in 1997. Half of his career dealt with the fraudulent side of immigration, and he became friends with many of his counterparts in the U.S. and abroad (especially if they loved fishing). His accomplishments were many more than listed here, but to him, he was just doing his job.

Retirement was not a word that he would recognize. Jim became the Emergency Co-ordinator for our municipality and shortly after was awarded Emergency Co-ordinator of the Year. He was a founding member of MAMEC, an association that gives emergency training to municipalities across the province. He was recognized and awarded many times for his incredible contributions, including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee medals.

He loved horses and took on the role of drug testing for Equine Canada events.

Jim was always interested in politics and became a valuable member of the board supporting our Member of Parliament. And inevitably, becoming close friends.

He had so many interests, but his passions were hunting and fishing. Especially hunting in the Carberry hills with his best friend Henry. That was always his most favorite time of the year, and he would allow nothing to interfere. Fishing with his many fishing buddies, mostly for the Channel Cats of the Red River in summer, or the beautiful Greenback Walleye in winter. And he was good. Very very good. Fishing added many more great friends to our lives. One of his greatest joys was taking kids fishing & helping them catch the large channel cats. Now Jim has earned his angel wings and his golden fishing rod.

Jim was also the person who kept up our garden. He could not tolerate weeds. Our garden and lawn were very well cared for.

The end of the day became "it's 5 O'clock somewhere" on the porch He was amazing. Simply amazing. Incredibly smart. Incredibly kind and giving.

In May we were given the opportunity to travel to Barbados and reconnect with old friends. In July we re-established our fish-fry tradition and hosted over 100 people.

Jim had so much more to live for, and he leaves behind a wealth of very good friends and family who have always loved him dearly.

We would like to thank the medical team who have travelled this journey with us. Our family doctor Dr Raubenheimer, Jim's oncologist Dr. Kotb and his nurse Kaitlyn at Cancer Care Manitoba, the amazing nurses and staff of GD6 at HSC, Cancer Care Selkirk, as well as our Multiple Myeloma Support Group.

We are planning a memorial in the month of May, appropriately the month when fishing season opens. An announcement will be made closer to the date. Tentative May 24th

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I first visited the Red River in Manitoba in the Spring of 1995 and apart from the 'Pandemic' year have visited the river every year since then. My friends and I come from the UK and came out to the Red to fish for Channel Catfish (a species we don't have in the UK) and, being British, Common Carp, much to the amusement of our Canadian cousins. I met Jim Stinson in 2001 when he filled in for a guide who failed to turn up, as he'd doubled booked himself. Jim took us to fish for Sturgeon on the Winnipeg River and as a tribute to his guiding skills, my two friends and I all caught several Sturgeon together with a number of Walleye, which Jim very kindly cooked up for us back at his home. So the basis of and enduring friendship was formed and one of the highlights of my holiday each year was hooking up with Jim and of course the love of his life Darlene. Jim was one of the most positive people I ever met and despite health setbacks, his tenacious hold on life was always present. I will miss him dearly. Tight Lines Old Friend. - Posted by: Stephen Pacitti (Friend) on: Mar 22, 2025

  • Kathe and I got to know Jim in our time together on the Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman EDA. His leadership, enthusiasm and dedication always impressed us and inspired us to become more actively involved. Shared values brought us together, but his personality is truly what made him a friend. While president of our EDA, he soldiered on during his treatments and never complained, always maintaining a positive attitude throughout. When I took over as president last May Jim both mentored and encouraged me in the role, and I truly appreciated his guidance. Dar, we hope your wonderful memories of Jim will bring you comfort you in the days ahead. Kathe and I were privileged to know him and will keep his memory alive by emulating the dedication he had to our board. - Posted by: Guy & Kathe Bernier (Friends) on: Mar 09, 2025

  • My heart goes out to you Darlene. I have many fond memories of Jim helping me when I started in Immigration Enforcement. Jim must have had many laughs. It was the days when Immigration Officers had no police training, females had to wear office attire [dresses and fancy shoes], no belt so cuffs were in the purse and I was female. I am proud to give a tribute to Jim for his understanding and patience. Rest in peace Jim! Lynette - Posted by: Lynette Tennison (Immigration) on: Mar 08, 2025

  • We are truly sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. What an amazing person. Our family has a wonderful memory of Channel Catfishing with Jim, our Son earning his Master Angler! We loved the fish fries Jim and Dar put together and were so happy to attend this past summer. We will miss the Christmas ice candles Jim dropped off every year as well as snowmobiling and chats over a stiff rye and 7up! Cheers to you Jim! Dar you’re in our thoughts, condolences to you and your family. Terry and Karen Kitching. - Posted by: Terry/Karen Kitching (Friends) on: Mar 08, 2025

  • Condolences to family and friends on Jim's passing. I met him many years ago when we were both serving in "D" Division, and like everyone else, always enjoyed his company. He had an enthusiasm that could not be missed. Nothing in the tribute to his life is surprising. His life was well lived and worthy of the comments offered in praise of his service to others. RIP. - Posted by: Jim Hislop (Friend and colleague in our chosen vocation in Manitoba) on: Mar 08, 2025

  • My deepest sympathies to you Darlene. Jim was, as you said a wonderful friend, full of fun and happiness. He was unjudgmental and always willing to help anyone.
