JAKE HARMS

Jake (Jacob) Harms passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 12, 2025, at Concordia Hospital at the age of 98 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 75 years, Anne Harms, and by their six children and their spouses, 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two sisters.

Jake’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him and his legacy of kindness, grace, wisdom and warmth will continue to inspire us.

He was well known, respected and appreciated in the Mennonite community in Manitoba and beyond for his lifelong service to the church, first as lay minister and then pastor in the Whitewater Mennonite Church, as lead pastor in Sargent Mennonite Church in Winnipeg and interim pastor at several other Mennonite churches, and for his contributions to Mennonite Church Canada, to Mennonite Church Manitoba and to Douglas Mennonite Church.

A memorial service to celebrate Jake’s life will be held on March 25, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Douglas Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. A donation in his honour may be made to Mennonite Central Committee. https://mcc.org/donate

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you today, (though we are many miles away - Portugal.) We extend our heartfelt sympathies to you Anne, and family. We cherish many fond memories of our associations with Jake and the family. May our Heavenly Father sustain you and keep you in His care as you mourn and grieve the loss of Jake. As well, special greetings and condolences to Eric and Kathy, and Jake and Helene whose friendship we treasured in the years gone by. • I met Jake Harms while he was the pastor at our church many years ago. I was having some difficulties with life and he gave me advice then that I have carried with me for the last 25 years. I will always be thankful for his friendliness, openness and sage, yet simple advice. My condolences to the family on your loss. Our church community has lost a great leader. - Posted by: Joanne Sawatzky (Church) on: Mar 22, 2025

  • Jake was a kind gentle man .I met Jake 10 years ago at our complex. He was soft polite and always had a hello. Jakes passion was reading, whether it was outside beside the swing or inside beside the fireplace. He always had inspired words at our Tuesday gathering around the fireplace .You’ll be missed Jake. You are now with your father God Bless. - Posted by: Bruce Hallmuth (Friend) on: Mar 22, 2025
