LORNE DAVID CHARTRAND

February 28, 1965 - March 10, 2025

Lorne David Chartrand residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 60, passed away peacefully at home at 10:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2025, after a life lived with both thirty years of good health and thirty years with a spinal cord injury.

Lorne was born on February 28, 1965, in Benito, Manitoba to father Jules Chartrand and mother Anne Stoesz. He graduated from University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with a double major in political science and journalism. Lorne loved music, especially attending the Folk Festival and working as a DJ. He also enjoyed photography, cooking delicious food, fantasy hockey where he won multiple championships, fishing, running marathons, playing hockey, and looking after his dog Zoey, his constant companion.

After his accident at the age of 30, Lorne settled down to follow his life’s dream to become a video journalist. He went to study Broadcast Journalism at Red River College and won several awards upon graduating. He also worked for the Canadian Paraplegic Association (Manitoba) where he wrote many articles as Editor of the Paratracks newsletter. Lorne was an advocate for creating a better life for those who struggle with spinal cord injuries as well as self-managed care and his work he began will continue on…

Lorne was charismatic, creative, adventurous and he loved to explore brave new worlds on land or with technology. Lorne brightened any room he entered and had epic and endless topics of conversation with splashes of the best humour throughout. He always made the people he loved know that he did in so many delightful ways.

Left to cherish his memory is his father, Jules Chartrand; sisters, Caroline, Yvette and Yvonne; brother Michael Chartrand, along with many cousins, aunties and uncles. He was predeceased by his mother Anne Stoesz, and brother Stephen Chartrand.

In lieu of flowers please donate in his memory to Spinal Cord Injury Inc.

Special thanks to the team of Health Specialists, staff, friends and family especially his father Jules Chartrand for the years of care for Lorne to ensure he had the best quality of life possible.

A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at the Coutu Funeral Home, 680 Archibald, at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing one hour prior to the service.

  • To the Chartrand family, our sincere condolences in the loss of Lorne. As a student at Westwood Collegiate, Lorne and our son Shaun became good friends and we were fortunate to get to know Lorne as well. Always a well mannered and thoughtful young man, a joy to be around. We have wonderful memories of Lorne at our family cottage. We will always remember Lorne as a very special young man.
