FRANK DEMBINSKY

Our father Frank David Dembinsky passed on March 30, 2025, in San Diego, California.

He was born in Montreal, Canada on August 5, 1921, the son of Anna Mergler Dembinsky and Isaac Benjamin (Ben) Dembinsky. He grew up in The Pas, Manitoba in Northern Canada, and served in the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) as a navigator from 1940 to 1945. It was there that he met our mother, the beautiful Greta Evelyn Teed and they married in 1945. They shared over 65 years together until Greta passed in 2010.

Frank is survived by his four daughters: Davilyn Eyolfson (Glenn Waterman), Karen Stein (Jack), Judith Beggs (Joe), Lisa Shahar (Ayal), his nephews, Michael and Stephan Dembinsky, his niece Esther Eadie, and friends like family Glenn and Charlene Richardson.

In addition he has 14 living grandchildren and their families: Maia Frumhartz, Aaron Eyolfson, Johann Eyolfson, Ivria Amar, Bat-Sheva Stein, Sigal Stein, Rivka Stein, Quinn Beggs, Jennifer O'Brien, Sam Beggs, Atsmon Shahar, Roee Shahar, Asaf Shahar and Ella Shahar. He was predeceased by his wife Greta, parents, Ben and Anna Dembinsky, brother Isador (Sonny) Dembinsky, sister Vera Trager, son-in-law Keith Eyolfson, beloved grandson Kris Eyolfson and niece Marsha Phomin.

Dad and Mom settled in Flin Flon, MB after the war where he developed Dembinsky's Menswear with his brother Sonny. He was active in municipal affairs, serving on the town council and then as mayor for several years. In midlife Dad ventured into the land development business and lived in various cities, far from his roots in Flin Flon and The Pas, places such as: Fort Lee, NJ; Toronto and Vancouver. He finished his career as President of Genstar Land for the United States, residing in San Diego from 1978 until his death.

Dad's greatest pride and joy was his large family, and he felt that "his cup runneth over" when he reminisced about his children and generations of grandchildren. Dad loved when his grandchildren ran around and let them do as they please, waiting patiently until they were adults when he could have serious conversations with them about life and their personal plans.

But it would be remiss not to mention the hundreds of close friends our Dad cherished over his lifetime, never forgetting the name or the family history of each and every one of them. Dad loved people: loved seeing them, loved talking to them, loved connecting with them either in person or on a phone call and loved helping them. If you have known Frank you have loved him. Dad was a generous, caring, and loving father and friend and his legacy will not disappear.

Funeral Service will be held in Winnipeg on April 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Crescent. Private family interment will follow at the Shaarey Zekek Cemetery, 230 Armstrong Avenue.

All are invited to attend the service and then join the family for a celebratory meal at 12:30 p.m. at the Viscount Gort Hotel at 1670 Portage Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Magen David Adom (Israel's ambulance service that operates solely on donations) in Frank's memory. He loved Israel and was a strong supporter, as well as having two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren residing there.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • The Dembinskys, both Frank and his brother, Sonny were not only builders of Flin Flon but also generous in their endeavours to make the Flon a better place to live. On top of that they were 1st class gentlemen and part of the last great generation. I have fond memories of Frank and Sonny, who left us way too soon. - Posted by: Darrell Nowosad (friend) on: Apr 14, 2025

  • For the whole school year when I was in Grade 12 (1950-51), I was the babysitter for Frank and Greta Dembinsky.I lived on the other side of town Frankie would pick me up, usually on a Saturday night and drive me to their place. Many kids who babysat were expected to do up the supper dishes and get the kids into bed. When I arrived everything was always spic and span, the kids were upstairs in bed asleep and there was a treat on the kitchen counter for me. I think there were three children at the time. I can’t be sure. I never saw them . They never woke up. Frankie and Greta usually came home around 1:00, paid me generously and Frankie drove me home. Other babysitters walked. came home around 1:00, paid me generously and Frankie drove me home. - Posted by: Avonne Horkoff Trainor (Baby sitter) on: Apr 13, 2025

  • Frank was an important piece of my life story. He encouraged my brother Dale to join the RCAF just as he always encouraged me in my education. It was alaways an event of great humour and political discussion to be invited back into Frank's office for one of his thought-provoking and wide-ranging discussions over which Frank would preside with the ever-present cigar in the corner of his mouth. They broke the mould when they made you, Frank. - Posted by: Bryan D Newton (Friend and admirer) on: Apr 10, 2025

  • Frank was a man one would never forget even if brief exchanges were the only interactions one ever had with him. It was immediately apparent that he was adventurous, enterpreneurial, kind and fair minded. He was always involved in the local community and I remember him for his generous sponsorship of many minor sports teams and bonspiel events. I have good memories of him. - Posted by: Alan Hume (customer and admirer) on: Apr 09, 2025

  • Davilyn, I would like to offer my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Shirley, Inspirations (Friend of Davilyn) on: Apr 06, 2025

  • Davie (as I knew you) my deepest sympathies to you and your family with the passing of your father. Cherish the memories and the life you had with him. - Posted by: Terry Kripiakevich (Friend from university) on: Apr 05, 2025

  • Frank would carry me as a credit customer all year and encourage me to pay my account when I earned some money in the summer months. He always treated me with respect. I'm sure he did that for many young men in Flin Flon in those early days. - Posted by: Bernard Struch (customer and friend at Flin Flon store) on: Apr 05, 2025
