JAMES EDWARD MCILROY
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of James E. McIlroy Sr. on April 14, 2025. Jim is survived by his wife of 22 years, Janice, his son Jim (Cheryl), daughter Marilyn, Jan's children Wendy Preteau (Phil) and Jim Fisher (Kristin Dahl). He is also survived by his grandchildren Rachel (Kai Lee), Chelsea (Landon Rabu), Jessica (Lewis Newman), Lauren, Kristen, Cody, Owen and Matthew, and great-grandchildren Vance, Sejin, Lanny and Lennox. He was predeceased by his first wife Marion (née Ruddick).
Jim was born in Winnipeg, but as a young child moved to Calgary with his family, then moved back to Winnipeg at age 10, to live with his beloved sister, Margaret, and her family. He attended Earl Grey School, Robert H. Smith School, Kelvin High School, United College, and the University of Manitoba.
Jim began his career with Mutual Life Insurance in 1958 at the age of 21 and enjoyed 45 successful years with Mutual Life, (later to become Clarica and then Sun Life) as a financial advisor and life insurance representative. He mentored generations of younger colleagues who maintained close friendships with him throughout his life. Jim was well respected for his honesty, integrity and client service, receiving the highest accolades within his profession.
Jim bought his beloved cottage at Spruce Sands in 1972, where he enjoyed 46 years on the shores of Lake Winnipeg with his family and friends. The cottage truly was the place that Jim felt most at peace, and he treasured his memories of Spruce Sands until the day he died. He enjoyed golfing with friends at the lake, in Arizona, and in Winnipeg; as well as cooking up pickerel for friends at the cottage.
Jim and Jan were married on the lakeshore in front of the cottage and their marriage was a partnership of love and devotion to each other, to their immediate and extended families, and their friends. Post-retirement they were able to enjoy travel, winters in Arizona, summers at the lake, and relaxing on their deck in Winnipeg.
Jim was grateful to be healthy until 87 years of age, before his battle with cancer. He was equally grateful for the care he received during his illness from Dr. Chris Matthews, Dr. Vibhay Pareek and the team at CancerCare Manitoba, the Health Sciences Centre, and the caring, compassionate staff at the Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care Unit. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or the Riverview Health Centre Foundation in Jim's memory.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Southwood Golf and Country Club.
