CHARLOTTE ANNE REID

Charlotte Anne Reid, 80 years old, living in Parksville, Vancouver Island, passed away on March 29, 2025. Charlotte was born on February 26, 1945, in Victoria, BC while her parents Charles and Anna Exner were posted in B.C. during the Second World War.

As a child Charlotte grew up in Hubbard, Saskatchewan. She often talked fondly about growing up in that small village where her father was the principal of the small two-room school. Later, in Melville, Charlotte attended Melville High School where she met her lifelong high school sweetheart, Grant Reid. They were married for more than 50 years, until Grant’s passing two years ago.

For most of her career Charlotte resided in Winnipeg where she worked as a teacher educator at the University of Manitoba. Charlotte was passionate about social justice, saying, “we need to rethink the role of “educator” and how ordinary people can do extraordinary things.” Curriculum development was the focus of her professional work. She saw cultural knowledge going beyond tolerance, providing for transformative change. For instance, she coordinated a trip to Thailand where her education students completed their teaching practicum.

Charlotte and Grant moved to Parksville nearly 20 years ago. Their home became a hub of activity, big enough so many visitors had a place to gather. They maintained the most beautiful garden full of flowers and majestic shrubs, spending many happy hours on their deck watching the resident hummingbirds feeding by their kitchen window. Their kitchen also hummed with new and old family recipes being prepared and enjoyed by all family and friends.

Charlotte was predeceased by her husband Grant. She is survived by her son Tim, her sister Donna, brothers, Allan and Bob. She was loved by all extended family and close friends.

Recently Charlotte remarked, “One day I will join Grant and together we will explore the stars.”

  • I remember Charlotte with great fondness. She was one of my B.Ed. professors at U.of M. She had a beautiful smile and stirred an awareness of justice in all of us. - Posted by: Sherry Funk (Student) on: Apr 26, 2025
