Solveig Joan Christie passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 29th at Arthur JE Child Cancer Care Centre at Foothills Hospital in Calgary where she received excellent care. She was an intelligent, talented artist and devoted partner to Murray Matthes for thirty-eight years. Born in Montreal, the eldest child of Hrefna and Skapti Borgford, Solveig grew up in the West End of Winnipeg. She is survived by her loving spouse, Murray Matthes, her three siblings, Karen Botting (Dwight) of Winnipeg, Lara Mazur (Harvey LaRocque), Burnaby, B.C., and Thor Borgford (Kelley Arnott), New Westminster, B.C. as well as Murray’s extended family, several nieces and nephews of whom she was proud, and many cousins. As a young woman, Solveig was an adventurer. Having graduated from the University of Manitoba in Fine Arts, she hitch-hiked through Europe with her long-time friend Pauline, working along the way. She trained as a stewardess with United Airlines in Chicago, living in New York City; in Montreal she worked at the National Film Board and Expo ’67 and then as a legal secretary back in Winnipeg. Always pursuing the visual arts, she won several awards for her paintings in juried shows. Murray and Solveig met in Winnipeg and moved to Calgary to start a new life and home at the Hunter Estates Housing Coop where she served on the Board. Always curious, Solveig and Murray, travelled Alberta, the border states and enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas. In later years, Solveig worked at Sears, as a homecare worker, and volunteered extensively at the Triangle Art Gallery, the Alberta Theatre Centre and the Kerby Senior Centre. She continued her artwork, exhibiting at the local library. Keeping connected to her Icelandic heritage; she joined the Leif Ericsson Icelandic Club of Calgary and participated in the Snorri program in Iceland. Cremation has taken place and as per her wishes, a private memorial will be held in Arnes, Manitoba at a later date.

Have many fond memories of Solveig. She came with us to Bemidji Minn where we went horse back riding. So sorry for your loss. Grieving is a journey often affecting your energy, concentration and memory. Take one day at a time and remember to take care of yourself. - Posted by: Elaine McElheran Bennett (Early childhood friend from Dominion street) on: Jun 07, 2025
