ROMAN CHRISTIUK
It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Roman Christiuk, who died peacefully in his sleep at 85, with family by his side, on June 5.
Left to cherish his memory are Ann, his wife of 55 years; daughters Susan (Alan), Karen (Adam) and Marsha; his much-loved grandchildren, Esmé, Isla and Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.
Roman was born on his Ukrainian family’s farm outside Bowsman shortly after they immigrated to Canada. They settled on a farm near Dufrost in 1948. With the help of his older sister Faye, he moved to Winnipeg as a teen to finish his schooling at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. He studied engineering at the University of Manitoba and worked as a civil engineer for Pioneer Grain and then the City of Winnipeg. He had many good memories of time spent with the people he met through work.
After he married Ann, the couple created a happy family for themselves in St. Vital. They also spent many wonderful summers at the cottage Roman designed and built on the shores of Traverse Bay.
During his 30 years of retirement, he was often seen with a hammer in hand, ready for any family project that came his way, even after his cancer diagnosis two years ago. Throughout his life, he was known for his ability to fix or build nearly anything.
Roman’s memorial service will be held Friday, June 13 at 11 a.m. at E.J. Coutu & Co. (680 Archibald St).
The family thanks the oncology staff at Victoria Hospital, especially Dr. Vallerie Gordon, and St. Boniface Hospital staff on floors 5 and 8. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Roman’s memory to the Lubov SSMI Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba.

I’m very sorry to hear this sad news. My heartfelt condolences to Roman’s family, friends, and all those who worked closely with him. When I first started at at the City, coming in from outside the organization, my early interactions with Roman were genuinely positive and encouraging. His kind demeanor and welcoming attitude made a strong impression on me as a newcomer. I always respected how he would jump in without hesitation—grabbing a pair of coveralls and saying, “Let’s go see this for ourselves.” That hands-on spirit and leadership left a lasting impact. He will be remembered fondly - Posted by: Dennis Glowasky (Co - Worker) on: Jun 10, 2025
