RUTH OLIVIA DUNLOP

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ruth Olivia Dunlop on July 11, 2025, at the age of 85.

Ruth was born on August 26, 1939, in St. Boniface Hospital to Roy and Mary (Nee Shewchuk) Dunlop. She grew up on the farm in Rosewood Manitoba.

After graduating from Lorette Centre Collegiate in 1956 she went on to study nursing at St, Boniface School of Nursing. Ruth graduated as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1959 and started working at St. Boniface. Ruth’s professional career saw her work in Vernon BC, St. Catherine’s and Kenora, Ontario. She returned to Winnipeg in 1967 and began work at the Grace Hospital and worked there as a head nurse until retirement in 1994.

Ruth truly knew that it was more blessed to give than to receive. Her siblings, nephews and nieces will always cherish her generosity and miss her birthday, anniversary and Christmas wishes. Her contributions to the family functions were the best as she would come laden with goodies and gifts and ready to play cards or a board game. Cabbage rolls and fancy sandwiches were a specialty, as was peanut butter marshmallow squares and candied strawberries. She spent many hours knitting, crocheting, cross stitching and embroidering many beautiful pieces for her family, friends and charity.

Left to cherish her memory are her sisters Mavis Asmundson and Isabelle Dunlop; brothers Peter and Patrick; loving nephews Tim (Lesley), Darin (Belinda), Ronald (Christine) and Paul (Christa); cherished niece Dawn; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her parents Roy and Mary, brother Sonny and his wife Joan, sister Susan, brother-in-law Earl and great-nephew Thomas.

She will also be missed by her many friends, specifically those at Lion’s Manor and Niakwa.

Although Ruth is gone, she will live in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice as Ruth’s are too many to mention. In honor of her final wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will occur at a later date. A special thank you goes out to the health care professionals and nurses at the Victoria Hospital who provided exceptional care these past seven weeks and met all of Ruth’s personal nursing and care standards.

  • "Miss Dunlop ", as everyone was expected to call her was my head nurse on 3 North at the Grace. She was well respected by all, compassionate and understanding in an unassuming manner, she was also a very private lady. • Miss Dunlop was my head nurse at the Grace Hospital when I was an LPN.. Before I was married my last name also was Dunlop. When I would answer the phone as Miss Dunlop it was true but not Ruth Dunlop. She was very well respected and very knowledgeable. I remember her once saying, (when the lights were dimmed for some reason), " I thought I was having a stroke!) Condolences to her family. I don't think my Dunlop family is at all related. - Posted by: Dorothy Dunlop Wiens (co worker) on: Jul 19, 2025
