DIRK ABERSON

Dirk H. Aberson passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025 in West Kelowna, BC with his wife Jessie by his side.

Dirk was born in Dauphin on February 12, 1930 and grew up on the family farm. He worked at The Brandon Sun as a photographer for 32 years and enjoyed every minute of his time there. Dirk was the ultimate people person he had an adventurous spirit, weather flying his 1948 Piper Cub, travelling and experiencing new places, or just talking to people, friends and strangers alike.

Dirk was pre-deceased by his mother and father, Jane and Bob Aberson, his first wife Beverly, brothers Bob and Wim and nephew Bobby.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Jessie, nieces Janis Anderson, Carol Sinclair, Patty Simpson, Dawn Aberson, and nephew Rick Aberson and their families.

A Celebration of Dirk’s life will be held next summer in Brandon at a date to be announced.

If desired, donations in Dirk’s memory may be made to The Branson Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I arrived in Brandon in the early ‘70’s having been hired by Frank Bird to work in the newsroom serving CKX radio & TV. One of the first people I encountered on assignment was Sun Photographer Dirk Aberson. I soon came to know Dirk as much more than a photographer, but as someone I could go to for background details on stories and people in Western Manitoba. Dirk often had the dirt on both!!! He shouldn’t have been motivated to mentor someone as inexperienced as me, but he did. A whispered word during a news conference or a "you might want to ask him about this". I have long since realized how lucky I was, during my career, to meet people like Dirk and my friend Brian Marshall. Dirk loved what he did and it showed. His family should take comfort in that and in a life well and fully lived. Were a picture truly worth a thousand words, then Dirk has written volumes. My condolences. • Jessie: I’m so very sorry to read of Dirks passing. I worked at The Brandon Sun many many many years and Dirk was always there. He was always so pleasant to work with, to talk with, sit & have coffee together. Dirk was always wonderful, kind person. My deepest condolences to you Jessie. • Losing a friend is difficult. Losing Dirk was particularly hard. I was there the day he joined our staff at the Sun and the day he bid adieu. And. For those 32 years he provided me with great memories as the consumate people person. To know Dirk was to remember him forever. He provided those who had the privilege to work with him memories to last a lifetime through his personal stories or through his work. He loved people whether he was photographing a child on the first day of school or a local worker on a retirement day. He loved spending time with all. To Jessie and the family my heartfelt condolences on their loss of this wonderful man. To Dirk, thanks for a lifetime of memories and may God bless you, my friend. - Posted by: Brian Marshall (Friend) on: Sep 27, 2025
