Haldor Ernest Thorkelson

Haldor (Hal) was born in Gimli, MB to Haldor (Dori) and Effie Thorkelson.

Haldor wore many hats in his career, including working on grain elevators, being a deck-hand on the MS Keenora, and working with glass and aluminum. Haldor had an entrepreneurial spirit and started a few successful businesses.

Haldor was an avid outdoor enthusiast. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, hunting, fishing, camping, snow machining, golfing and tinkering in the garage whenever he had a chance. Haldor had an infectious laugh and a smile that would light up the entire room. He was kind, generous, and devoted to his family and friends. He loved to joke around and have fun and lived his life to the fullest.

Haldor was the patriarch of our family and will be dearly missed. Haldor is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carol; his son Haldor Jr.; his daughter Vanessa (Blair); and grandchildren Ranen and Avalin, as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and foster children.

Haldor was predeceased by his parents, all four of his siblings, his first grandson and many dear friends and extended family.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the David Suzuki Foundation at davidsuzuki.org.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My very deepest condolences to Haldor's family. We were cousins but because he was older than I was we did not have much interaction which is very sad. The few times we were together I always enjoyed being with him. I was close with his sisters Effie and Georgina! May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Louise Bloomfield (Cousin) on: Nov 18, 2025
