VICTOR BURTNYK

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Burtnyk on November 19, 2025, at the age of 98.

Victor was predeceased by his beloved wife, Pauline; parents, Anna and Alexander; and sisters, Alice, Helen, and Sally. He leaves to mourn his children, Sandra, Brenda (Maurizio), and Ellen; grandchildren, Alex (Megan) and Melina; brothers, Nestor, Eugene, and Wayne; brother-in-law Bill; sister-in-law Jane, as well as numerous relatives and friends.

Victor was born in Garland, Manitoba as the third of seven children. With a busy house at home, his mom sent him to school with his younger brother Nestor at the very young age of four, where he was “taught” by his father, the local school teacher. This introduction to learning opened a vast world for Victor, and tapped into a curiosity about science and math, which lasted a lifetime. At high school, Victor continued to excel, earning top marks and accolades from his teachers. Noting his academic proficiency, his teachers suggested that he continue his education at university, to pursue a career as a doctor or engineer. Victor didn’t want to pursue medicine, but thought that driving a train sounded interesting. At sixteen, he was accepted at the University of Manitoba, in the Faculty of Engineering. His science prowess continued where he wowed his family and friends with his ability to perform calculus in his head, and averaged over 90% in many of his courses (except Personnel and Management which was a dismal 77%).

In 1948, Victor graduated from university and moved to Ottawa, where he accepted a job at Gatineau Power. It was in Ottawa that he reconnected with Pauline, whom he had met years earlier in Winnipeg, and they celebrated their marriage in 1953. After living in Ottawa for ten years and having two beautiful daughters, Victor and Pauline moved to Pennsylvania, where they were blessed with a third daughter. Early family life included many family vacations, neighborhood picnics, and board games - times marked by Victor’s gentle and steady presence. Although happy, they missed home and returned to Winnipeg in 1973. Victor was so highly respected that he was hired by Teshmont Consulting on the spot, and Winnipeg became their home once again.

As a specialist in power supply planning, and one of the top engineers in his specialty, Victor was fortunate to travel the world. His work took him to Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, India and Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand, Russia, China and throughout Canada. In connection with his work, he developed designs which are patented under his name, and his writings on the field of reliability became subject matter that later were taught in University.

In 1992, Victor retired, but interests quickly shifted to new activities, including curling, golf, computer classes, tai chi, canvassing for charity, and gardening. He loved travelling to Florida with his brothers, and to Las Vegas with Pauline, but nothing brought more joy than time spent with his grandchildren sharing with them his love of learning and home.

The unwavering constants in his life were his love for Pauline and his family, and his faith. He was a truly kind and gentle soul throughout his life. Even through his illness with Alzheimer’s, these core characteristics were undiminishable.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge for their care and compassion they showed Victor during his time with them. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St Paul.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Golden West Centennial Lodge (811 School Road, Winnipeg, MB, R2Y 0S8) or to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba (120 Donald Street #10, Winnipeg MB, R3C 4G2).
