Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES (JIM) KERNEY
After a short illness, Jim passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026 at the Grace Hospital at the age of 85.
He is survived by his wife Jenette; son Allan (aka Duff) (Judy); granddaughter Caitlyn (Andrew); grandson Myles (Kristen); great-grandchildren, Milana, Ethan, Madison, Hunter, and Theo.
He was predeceased by his son Walter; sister Lillian; second wife Renee; his mother Kathleen "Kay"; his father John "Jack"; and stepmother Myra.
Jim started his work life at Red River Co-op in 1958. He joined the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1961, served until 1999, retiring after over 37 years. He held the rank of District Chief.
He was an exceptionally talented handyman and took great pride in his home in Charleswood, the cottage at Lakeshore Heights, and the lot and trailer at the campground.
In later years, Jim and Jenette loved spending time at Millers Campground. They also enjoyed travelling, which included several trips to beautiful Newfoundland. That gave them the chance to visit their niece and nephew Dara and Corey Mayo and their sons Cody and Myles. They also made memorable trips to BC and Vancouver Island.
Jim particularly loved his early morning visits with his coffee buddies. He also had numerous golfing friends both in Canada and the US. He was a cherished and helpful friend to everyone in the condo building.
Special thanks to the staff at the Grace Hospital for their wonderful care, both in Emergency and 5 South.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.

On behalf of Custom Vac, we are sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Our Condolences to Jenette and families. I have known Jim for a very long time and he also worked with my father in law at the Co-op and was a longtime customer of Custom Vac's. Jim was a very kind man whenever I had talked and meet with him. Always had a chuckle and a bit of remembrance of when he worked at the Co-op with my father in law. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Denise Baker (friend) on: Jan 31, 2026
