It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Unger (nee Toews) on February 13, 2026, at the age of 92.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Jack and her six siblings. She is survived by her son Grant (Cindy), and daughters Shirley (Rob) and Dianne (John) and her grandchildren Russell (Amanda), Emily (Liam) and Riley. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter Elaina.
Mom was born on a farm near the village of Kronsthal, MB and in the same year of her birth her family moved to the district of Eigenhof in the Municipality of Rhineland. Mom went to grade school in Eigenhof and graduated from the Mennonite College in Gretna. She continued her education and got her teacher’s degree at Teacher’s College in Winnipeg.
Mom and Dad married on August 4, 1956, and lived in Winnipeg. Mom continued to teach full time until Grant was born in 1959. Mom went back to teaching as a substitute teacher in St. James School Division when we moved to the Silver Heights area in 1971. Mom and Dad both retired in 1993 and moved to Sandy Hook where they built their retirement home. They moved back to Winnipeg in 2009 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
After Dad passed in 2019, Mom moved to Lindenwood Manor where she lived until her passing.
In keeping with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and the Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg
