It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Douglas Coutts on February 9, 2026 at the age of 86.
John was born in Winnipeg on June 22, 1939. He grew up in Woodhaven and called St. James home for his entire life, raising his family there and building a career devoted to education and athletics.
He was predeceased by his parents, Pat and Gwen Coutts, and his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and James Rea.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Marge; his sons, Jeff (Lalonnie) and Craig; grandchildren, Rachel, Jordan, Mason, and Daniel; his cousin Margaret; and many nieces and nephews.
John had a 36-year career teaching and coaching at Silver Heights Collegiate, where he inspired generations of students both in the classroom and on the field. His dedication to his students and athletes left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of learning from him.
John will be remembered for his devotion to family, his passion for teaching, and his enduring presence in the St. James community.
The family wishes to thank the many staff, nurses and doctors who cared for John with such compassion.
A memorial gathering will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to KidSport Manitoba or Rossbrook House. John felt that every child deserves to be safe and to have a place to play.

We first met John the young teacher at SHC, he was our geography teacher, he was sometimes easy to get him to get off subject and talk about other topics…after retirement we were fortunate to meet again, we enjoyed being his neighbour at Apple Lane. It was always fun to talk with him about family, and sports. Our condolences to the family. Doug & Nina Constable. - Posted by: Doug & Nina Constable (friends) on: Feb 21, 2026

I am sorry to hear of Mr. Coutts passing. I had the good luck to have him as a teacher at Silver Heights but also a basketball coach in the 1970's. Years later, I would take my children skating at Woodhaven community club and would catch up with John, (I called him John by then) and reminisce about old times and talk about new times. He was always such a smiling, friendly man. I appreciated his guidance and friendship in my life. - Posted by: Kim Ross (Former student) on: Feb 21, 2026

Although I am saddened at Johns passing I want to say a life well lived Sir! I have to go back to the late 70's at Silver Heights as a student and had the privilege of being in Johns class. Mr. Coutts was one of the teachers that held a place in my memory. I want to thank John for his support and encouragement during my school days! It was a privilege to know you and the knowledge passed the thousands of students during your tenure as a teacher. Your impact will not be forgotten. - Posted by: Colin McNeill (Former student) on: Feb 21, 2026

To the Coutts family, my deepest sympathies to your whole family. Mr. Coutts taught me journalism in the early 80's. I still have projects I did in his class. He was so encouraging all the time. He most definitely was an amazing teacher. - Posted by: AnnaMaria Colman Colman (Former student) on: Feb 21, 2026
