Douglas Frederick - husband, father, grandfather. Doug passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, ending his lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Doug was born on May 3, 1949. His primary school years were spent attending Little Souris School, followed by his high school years at Neelin High School. Born into a farming family, Doug knew he wanted to continue this way of life. Following graduation, Doug enrolled in a Farm Management program and began pursuing his dream in 1968, starting with 30 to 40 hogs during the first two summers of his farming career.
Doug eventually got into cattle and fondly recalled purchasing his first Hereford cow and calf, doing chores for neighbours, receiving the gift of a Black Angus heifer, and having the opportunity to attend the Toronto Royal Fair in 1969.
In the fall of 1973, Doug married Patricia Ann O’Neil. They resided at the Cotton Farm until 1981, when they moved down the road to the home farm, Maple Cliff. In the years that followed, Doug and Pat raised four children: Beccy, Jenny, David, and Steven. More recently, Doug’s family grew as he welcomed a son-in-law, Dan, a grandson, Liam, and his youngest son’s partner, Cailey.
Doug continued to farm at the home farm, which he referred to as “Ardiel Farms.” He enjoyed discussing the many aspects of farming with anyone willing to listen and could often be found enjoying a cup of coffee with his regular coffee crew at Humpty’s.
In 2016, Doug and Pat moved off the farm into their new home, where he spent two years before transitioning to Valleyview Personal Care Home in Brandon. For 55 years, Doug was active in the family farm.
Doug is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pat; daughters Beccy (Dan Voth) and Jenny; sons David and Steven (Cailey Nichols); and grandson Liam. He is also survived by his brother Ron (Betty); nephew Rory (Chantal), niece Shallon (Bryan) and their families; mother-in-law Liz O’Neil; brothers-in-law Dennis (Penny) O’Neil and Allan (Diane) O’Neil; sister-in-law Lyn MacRury; as well as nieces and nephews Melissa (Josh), Morgan (Adam), Colton (Cassie), and their families.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, John and Annie Ardiel; his father-in-law, Leslie O’Neil; and brother-in-law Maurice O’Neil.
A graveside service to honour and celebrate Doug’s life was held on March 19, 2026, at the Brandon Hills Cemetery, followed by a time for fellowship at the Brandon Hills Community Centre. Pallbearers were Bryce Granger, Troy Granger, Chris McKay, Aaron Hargreaves, Mitchell McPherson, and Colton Young.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug’s memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Society (donate@parkinsons.ca).
The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of Valleyview Personal Care Home for their support and care during Doug’s time at their facility.
