BEN CHEREWYK

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts, the family of Ben Cherewyk announces his peaceful passing on March 26, 2026, at Rideau Park Personal Care Home. Ben quietly left this world to be with God and the loved ones who went before him.

Born on March 17, 1937, in Veregin, Saskatchewan, Ben was raised on the family farm by his parents, Joe and Lena. From an early age, he showed a strong work ethic and a knack for fixing and building, traits that would follow him throughout his life. After graduation, he began working for Manitoba Hydro on the Kelsey Dam before moving to Brandon, where he became a Registered Psychiatric Nurse at BMHC—a career he dedicated 32 years to before retiring in 1992.

It was during his time at BMHC that Ben met the love of his life, Anne (Skene), and they married in 1965. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family, welcoming a daughter, Linda, and a son, Steven. Many of their happiest moments were spent building and enjoying their family cottage at Chimo Resort—a place where countless celebrations, holidays, and quiet family days created memories that will last generations.

Ben’s love of building and fixing extended beyond the cottage. He delighted in helping his children renovate their first homes, tinkering with cars, and exploring anything mechanical. His passion for airplanes led him to build a miniature working plane for his son, Steven, a creation that brought endless joy and became a treasured family memory. Watching Steven grow into a pilot, and eventually a Captain with Air Canada, brought Ben immense pride, and enjoyed flights with his friend and neighbour, Roy Sobchuck.

Family milestones were some of Ben’s proudest moments. He celebrated the births of his granddaughters, Amy and Ella, attended Steven and Sara’s wedding in Toronto in 2024, and welcomed his great-grandson, James Assels, with joy and love.

Ben was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He shared 60 wonderful years of marriage with Anne, and leaves behind his children, Linda Cherewyk and Steven Cherewyk (Sara Mehrjou); his granddaughters, Amy Assels (Chris Assels) and Ella Cherewyk (Kasch Lentir); and his great-grandson, James Assels. He is also survived by his brother, Nestor Cherewyk, of Kamsack, Saskatchewan, and remembered fondly by many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest brother, Lawrence. Those who knew Ben will remember his warmth, his sense of humour, and his unique ability to make people laugh and feel loved.

As per Ben’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, in the cottage he built, in the homes he helped shape, and in the countless memories he created along the way.

I'M FREE

Don't grieve for me, for now I am free

I'm following the path God has laid you see.

I took His hand when I heard Him call

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day

To laugh, to love, to work, to play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way

I found that peace at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, oh yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life's been full, I savoured much

Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief

Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your hearts, and peace to thee

God wanted me now; He set me free
